Databricks

What it is

Databricks is an enterprise platform for storing, processing, analyzing and governing data and building AI on top of it. Built around the lakehouse architecture, it brings data engineering pipelines, a serverless SQL data warehouse, business intelligence, machine learning and generative AI development together on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. Unity Catalog provides governance across data and AI assets, while AI features include an assistant for business users, tools for building and evaluating AI agents and a Postgres database for data apps. Databricks was founded in 2013 by the creators of Apache Spark and also maintains open source projects such as Delta Lake and MLflow. A Free Edition is available for learning, and production use is billed on consumption.

Key features

  • Lakehouse data engineering and ETL
  • Serverless SQL data warehouse
  • Unity Catalog governance
  • Tools for ML and AI agents

What we liked

  • + Covers the full data and AI lifecycle
  • + Runs on all three major clouds
  • + Free Edition for learning and experimentation

Worth noting

  • · Consumption pricing can be hard to predict
  • · Steep learning curve for smaller teams

Editor's notes

More context from AI BirdView

Many companies run data pipelines, warehouses, dashboards and machine learning in separate systems. Databricks brings these together on a single lakehouse foundation, which reduces copying data between tools and makes governance easier to apply consistently. Its roots in Apache Spark give it a strong reputation for large-scale data processing, and recent additions focus on helping teams build AI applications directly on their governed data.

  • Data engineering and orchestration for batch and streaming workloads
  • Serverless SQL warehousing and built-in business intelligence
  • Unity Catalog for governing data, models and AI assets in one place
  • Tools to build, deploy and evaluate machine learning models and AI agents
  • Open source projects including Delta Lake and MLflow

Databricks is best for data teams at mid-size and large organizations that need one platform for analytics and AI across their cloud environment. Smaller teams can start with the Free Edition to learn the platform before committing to paid usage. A practical tip: set up budgets and cost alerts early and use the official cost calculator, since compute consumption is the main driver of your bill.
