OpenClaw
What it is
OpenClaw is an open-source AI assistant created by Peter Steinberger and now stewarded by the nonprofit OpenClaw Foundation. You install it on your own Mac, Windows or Linux computer with a script, npm or from source, then run an onboarding command to connect a model provider of your choice, whether hosted, subscription-backed or local. From there you talk to it through chat apps you already use, including WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, Signal and iMessage. It keeps persistent memory about your people and projects, can browse the web, fill forms, read and write files and run shell commands with full or sandboxed access, and grows through community skills and plugins. The software itself is free.

Editor's notes
More context from AI BirdView
Most AI assistants live in a vendor's cloud and a dedicated app. OpenClaw flips that around: it runs on your own computer and meets you in the messaging apps you already open all day. Because the whole project is MIT licensed and has no paid tier, it has become a popular base for people who want a capable personal agent while keeping control of their data and choice of model.
- Around two dozen chat channels are supported, from WhatsApp and Telegram to Slack, Discord, Signal and iMessage.
- Persistent memory lets it remember your preferences, ongoing projects and the people you work with.
- Real computer actions include web browsing, form filling, file editing and shell commands, with a sandboxed mode for caution.
- Bring your own model, whether a hosted API, an existing subscription, a gateway or a model running locally.
- An extension ecosystem of community skills and plugins, plus the option to write your own, keeps expanding what it can do.
OpenClaw is ideal for developers, tinkerers and privacy-minded users who are comfortable with a terminal and want an assistant they fully own. A practical tip: start in sandboxed mode with a single chat channel, watch how it handles a few routine tasks, and only grant full shell and file access once you trust the skills you have installed.
