Screenpipe

What it is

Screenpipe is a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux that keeps a private, searchable record of what you see and hear on your computer. It captures screenshots when the screen changes, extracts text through accessibility APIs with OCR as a fallback, and transcribes system and microphone audio locally with Whisper. Everything is stored in a local database by default. You can search your history in plain language, scrub back through your day, and let it spot recurring workflows to draft follow-ups, SOPs or automations. Privacy controls exclude apps, windows and URLs and redact sensitive fields. A local API and MCP server let assistants and agents use this context. The code is source-available.

Key features

Editor's notes

More context from AI BirdView

Screenpipe takes a local-first approach to a problem many people feel daily: forgetting where you saw something. It quietly records your screen and audio, turns them into searchable text on your own machine, and then makes that history available to the AI tools you already use. Founder Louis Beaumont started the project in 2024, and the code remains source-available for inspection.

  • Captures text through accessibility APIs, with OCR as a fallback for other apps
  • Transcribes meetings and system audio locally using Whisper
  • Lets you search in plain language and jump back to the exact moment
  • Detects recurring workflows and helps draft follow-ups, SOPs or automations
  • A local API and MCP server connect your history to agents and assistants

Screenpipe is best for knowledge workers, developers and researchers who switch between many apps and want an assistant that understands their actual day. Teams can look at the business plan for device management, SSO and audit logs. A practical tip: set up exclusions for password managers, banking sites and private chats on day one, so sensitive windows are never captured, and review your storage settings after the first week of recording.
