Freepik AI vs Midjourney vs Leonardo AI (2026): Which AI Image Generator Is the Best Value?
Freepik AI (now branded Magnific) bundles dozens of image and video models with a stock library, Midjourney sells the most distinctive look, and Leonardo AI offers the best free tier and fine control. Here is what each one really costs in 2026.
Short verdict: pick Midjourney if image quality and a distinctive artistic look matter more than anything else, and you are happy to pay from $10/mo with no free tier. Pick Leonardo AI if you want a real free plan, granular controls, custom models and private generations from $12/mo. Pick Freepik AI if you want one subscription that covers many image and video models, an upscaler, and a huge stock library, which makes it the best value for designers and marketers who produce a lot of different assets.
One thing to know first: in April 2026 Freepik rebranded its platform as Magnific, after the AI upscaler it acquired in 2024. Freepik.com and its pricing page now redirect to magnific.com, and existing accounts and subscriptions carried over. Most people still search for "Freepik AI", so we use both names here. This comparison is based on official sites, pricing pages and public user feedback as of October 2026. We have not run our own benchmark tests.
Quick verdict by use case
Best image quality and artistic style: Midjourney.
Best free plan: Leonardo AI, with 150 tokens a day. Midjourney has no free tier.
Most models for one price: Freepik AI (Magnific), with its own models plus Flux, Google's Nano Banana, GPT image models, Ideogram, Recraft and more.
Stock photos, vectors and templates alongside AI: Freepik AI, by a wide margin.
Consistent characters and custom-trained models: Leonardo AI.
Private generations on a budget: Leonardo AI, where paid plans are private from the entry tier. Midjourney needs Pro for Stealth Mode.
Heavy AI video work: Freepik AI on a higher tier, or Leonardo Ultimate for unlimited relaxed video on its own Motion models.
Pricing compared (as of October 2026)
Prices are in USD and exclude tax. Each tool counts usage differently: Freepik sells credits, Midjourney sells GPU time, and Leonardo sells tokens, so the cost per image depends on the model, resolution and speed you choose. Confirm current numbers on the official pages: Magnific (Freepik) pricing, Midjourney plans and Leonardo AI pricing.
| Tool | Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freepik AI (Magnific) | Free | $0 | A small daily credit allowance, enough to test models |
| Premium | About $14.50/mo billed annually | 240,000 credits a year, commercial AI license, premium stock assets | |
| Premium+ | About $33.75/mo billed annually | 600,000 credits a year plus unlimited use of a curated set of models | |
| Pro | About $210/mo billed annually | 4 million credits a year for high-volume professional work | |
| Midjourney | Basic | $10/mo, or about $8/mo billed annually | About 3.3 Fast GPU hours a month, no Relax mode |
| Standard | $30/mo, or about $24/mo billed annually | 15 Fast hours plus unlimited Relax mode images | |
| Pro | $60/mo, or about $48/mo billed annually | 30 Fast hours, Stealth Mode for private images | |
| Mega | $120/mo, or about $96/mo billed annually | 60 Fast hours and higher concurrency | |
| Leonardo AI | Free | $0 | 150 tokens a day (no rollover), public generations |
| Essential | $12/mo | 8,500 fast tokens a month, private generations, token rollover | |
| Premium | $30/mo | 25,000 fast tokens plus unlimited relaxed generation on Leonardo's own image models | |
| Ultimate | $60/mo | 60,000 fast tokens plus unlimited relaxed image and Motion video |
Annual billing saves roughly 20% on Midjourney and up to 20% on Leonardo. Freepik's headline prices assume annual billing and are frequently discounted further by promotions, so the price you see may be lower. Team and business plans exist for all three.
What a month of images really costs
For a casual user making a few dozen images a week, the cheapest workable option is Leonardo's free plan, followed by Midjourney Basic or Leonardo Essential at $10 to $12/mo. For a heavy user making hundreds of images a month, unlimited modes change the math: Midjourney Standard's Relax mode, Leonardo Premium's relaxed generation, and Freepik Premium+'s unlimited models all let you generate without watching a meter, as long as you accept slower queues or a limited model list. The real cost driver is video. Video models burn credits, GPU time and tokens far faster than still images on all three platforms.
A few billing details catch people out. Midjourney's unused Fast hours do not roll over, even on annual plans, and extra Fast time costs about $4 an hour. Leonardo rolls unused paid tokens into a bank capped at three times your monthly grant, but the bank is lost if you cancel. Freepik's Premium+ "unlimited" applies to a list of roughly ten models that the company curates and has changed before, and premium models still consume credits.
What each tool actually is
Freepik AI (now Magnific)
Freepik AI grew out of Freepik, the stock image and vector marketplace founded in 2010. Today it is a multi-model creative suite: an AI image generator with its own Magnific models alongside third-party models such as Flux, Nano Banana, GPT image models, Ideogram, Recraft and Seedream, plus video generation with models like Kling, Veo and Seedance, audio and music tools, image editing, and the well-known Magnific upscaler. Paid plans also unlock a stock library of more than 250 million assets. The appeal is breadth: instead of paying separately for several generators and a stock subscription, you get them in one place.
Midjourney
Midjourney is the independent research lab whose model produces the most recognizable aesthetic in AI art: rich lighting, painterly textures and strong composition, even from short prompts. It began as a Discord bot (the famous /imagine command is where the phrase "imagine artwork" comes from) and now has a full web app with an editor for inpainting and outpainting, style references, personalization profiles, moodboards and image-to-video. Midjourney trains its own models instead of offering a menu of third-party ones, so you get one look, refined over many versions.
Leonardo AI
Leonardo AI, acquired by Canva in 2024, started as a tool for game assets and has become a general creative platform. It offers its own models (Phoenix and Lucid) plus third-party models, a Canvas editor for inpainting and outpainting, real-time generation, image-to-video through its Motion models, and the ability to train personal models on your own images for consistent characters, products or styles. Leonardo exposes more settings than Midjourney, which makes it popular with game developers, illustrators and anyone who wants repeatable results.
Head to head
Image quality and style
Midjourney remains the benchmark for artistic quality. Public user feedback consistently praises its lighting, texture and composition, and it rarely produces a dull image. Leonardo's Phoenix and Lucid models are strong on prompt adherence and photorealism, and its custom models let you lock in a style. Freepik's quality depends on the model you pick, which is both a strength and a burden: the best models it hosts are excellent, but you need to learn which one suits which job.
Winner: Midjourney for style, Freepik for range.
Free plans and trials
Leonardo offers the most useful free plan, with 150 tokens a day that reset every 24 hours. The catch is that free creations are public and Leonardo retains broad rights to them. Freepik also has a free tier with a small daily credit allowance, which is fine for testing models and the upscaler. Midjourney has no free tier or free trial, and refunds are only available if you have used very little GPU time.
Winner: Leonardo AI.
Value for money
At the entry level, Midjourney Basic at $10/mo and Leonardo Essential at $12/mo are close, but Leonardo includes private generations and rollover while Midjourney Basic has no Relax mode. In the middle, Midjourney Standard ($30/mo) and Leonardo Premium ($30/mo) both offer unlimited slower generation, which is excellent value for heavy image users. Freepik Premium+ costs a similar amount per month on annual billing and adds a stock library, an upscaler and many more models, so it gives designers the most assets per dollar if they would otherwise pay for stock separately.
Winner: Freepik AI for designers who need stock and many models. Midjourney Standard or Leonardo Premium for pure image volume.
Commercial use and licensing
All three allow commercial use of images made on paid plans, with differences worth reading. Midjourney grants commercial rights to paid subscribers, but companies with more than $1 million in gross annual revenue must be on Pro or Mega, and images are public in the gallery unless you use Stealth Mode on Pro or Mega. Leonardo's paid plans give you ownership of your outputs and private generations from Essential upward, while free-tier outputs are public with broader rights retained by Leonardo. Freepik's paid plans include a commercial AI license, and higher tiers add music rights. If you plan to trademark a logo or sell prints, check each platform's terms and remember that copyright protection for purely AI-generated images is limited in many countries.
Winner: Leonardo AI for privacy on a budget. Freepik AI for marketers who also need licensed stock.
Editing, control and consistency
Leonardo gives you the most direct control: custom model training, image guidance, a canvas editor and many adjustable settings. Midjourney's web editor, style and image references, and personalization have closed much of the gap, and they are easier to use than Leonardo's dense panels. Freepik offers solid editing tools, upscaling, background removal and node-style workflows for chaining models, which suits production teams.
Winner: Leonardo AI for control, Midjourney for ease.
Video generation
All three now do video, but differently. Midjourney animates your images and draws on your Fast hours, with Relax video on higher plans. Leonardo's Ultimate plan includes unlimited relaxed video on its own Motion models, while third-party video models cost tokens. Freepik hosts the widest range of video models, including several premium ones, but those consume credits quickly, and reviewers note that heavy daily video use can drain a mid-tier plan within weeks.
Winner: Freepik AI for model choice, Leonardo Ultimate for predictable cost.

FAQ
Is Freepik AI the same as Magnific?
Yes. In April 2026 Freepik rebranded its AI platform as Magnific, the name of the upscaler it acquired in 2024. The company behind it is the same, accounts carried over, and freepik.com now redirects to magnific.com.
Is Freepik AI free?
There is a free tier with a small daily credit allowance for testing models. Paid plans start with Premium at about $14.50/mo on annual billing, which adds 240,000 credits a year, premium stock assets and a commercial AI license.
Is Freepik AI better than Midjourney?
It depends on what you value. Midjourney usually produces the more striking images from a single model. Freepik AI gives you many models, video tools, an upscaler and a stock library for a similar monthly price, which is better value for varied design work.
Is Leonardo AI better than Midjourney?
Leonardo is better for free use, private images on cheaper plans, and custom-trained models. Midjourney is better for artistic quality and ease of getting a great image quickly.
Does Midjourney have a free trial in 2026?
No. Midjourney has no free tier or trial. The cheapest plan is Basic at $10/mo, or about $8/mo with annual billing.
Can I use AI images commercially?
On paid plans, all three allow commercial use, with conditions. Midjourney requires Pro or Mega for companies above $1 million in annual revenue, Leonardo's free-tier images are public with broader rights retained by Leonardo, and Freepik includes a commercial AI license on paid plans. Always read the current terms.
What does "imagine" mean in Midjourney?
/imagine is the Discord command used to generate an image from a text prompt, which is why AI art is often called "imagine artwork". On the Midjourney web app you simply type your prompt into the create bar.
Final verdict
There is no single winner, because the three tools are priced and built for different people. Midjourney is the choice when the image itself has to impress. Leonardo AI is the best starting point if you want a free plan, privacy on a budget and fine control over consistent results. Freepik AI, now Magnific, is the best value for designers and marketing teams who want many models, video, upscaling and stock assets under one subscription. Test the free tiers where they exist, generate the same three prompts in each, and pay for the one whose results you would actually publish.
