DeepSeek vs ChatGPT (2026): Free Open Model or the Full-Featured Assistant?

Short verdict: in DeepSeek vs ChatGPT, choose DeepSeek if you want a strong reasoning and coding model for free, open weights you can run on your own hardware, or very cheap API calls. Choose ChatGPT if you want a complete assistant with image generation, voice, agents, memory and team controls, and if you cannot accept your data being stored in China. For individuals with sensitive work, and for anyone in government or a regulated industry, ChatGPT (or DeepSeek's open weights hosted somewhere you trust) is the safer choice.

DeepSeek shook the industry in early 2025 by matching top US models at a fraction of the cost. In 2026 it shipped the V4 family and, in September, V4.1-Flash, a 552-billion-parameter open-weight model with a 1M-token context window. OpenAI answered with GPT-6 Astra in September and the cheaper GPT-6 Sol and Luna. This comparison draws on official documentation, pricing pages, privacy policies and public reporting, not our own benchmark tests. Vendor benchmark claims are labeled as such.

Quick verdict by use case

  • Free chat with strong reasoning: DeepSeek. The app is free and does not show ads.

  • Everyday all-purpose assistant: ChatGPT, with far more features.

  • Coding in chat: close. For agentic coding, ChatGPT's Codex is more mature.

  • Cheapest frontier-class API: DeepSeek for its Flash model off-peak, though OpenAI's GPT-6 Luna is now even cheaper per token for lighter work.

  • Running a model on your own servers: DeepSeek. Its weights are MIT-licensed; ChatGPT's models are closed.

  • Images, voice and video: ChatGPT. DeepSeek does not generate images.

  • Sensitive, regulated or government work: ChatGPT business plans, or self-hosted DeepSeek. Not the DeepSeek app.

  • Questions about Chinese politics or history: ChatGPT. DeepSeek's app censors these topics.

Current models: DeepSeek V4.1 vs GPT-6

DeepSeek's lineup

DeepSeek released preview versions of V4-Pro (a 1.6-trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts model) and V4-Flash on April 24, 2026, with open weights. The final V4-Pro build followed on August 13. On September 10 it launched V4.1-Flash: 552 billion total parameters but only about 8 to 16 billion active per token, a 1M-token context window, native image understanding and an MIT license. DeepSeek's API documentation now serves its default Flash model from a refreshed V4.1-Flash-1017 build, with V4-Pro still available as the pricier option. A V4.1-Pro has not been released.

OpenAI's lineup

OpenAI's current family is GPT-6 Astra (the flagship, released September 3), GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Sol (near-flagship), GPT-6.1 Terra and GPT-6 Luna (fast and cheap). All list a 1.05M-token context window in the API. In ChatGPT, Free and Go users get the lighter models, Plus gets Sol in chat and Astra inside the Work agent and Codex, and the Pro tiers get Astra in chat.

How they compare: DeepSeek's own launch table claimed V4.1-Flash scored 74.2 on the DeepSWE coding benchmark versus 73.0 for OpenAI's previous GPT-5.6 Sol, while trailing US models badly on Humanity's Last Exam and other hard reasoning tests. Those are vendor numbers and predate GPT-6. The fair summary is that DeepSeek is competitive with OpenAI's mid-tier models at a much lower price, but GPT-6 Astra remains ahead on the hardest tasks.

Pricing: free use and plans (as of October 2026)

For consumers, the comparison is simple. DeepSeek's chat app on the web, iOS and Android is free, with no paid tier and no ads, though it has unpublished usage limits that tighten when servers are busy. ChatGPT has a free tier and four paid levels.

PlanDeepSeekChatGPT
FreeFull app: chat, DeepThink reasoning, web search, file uploadsLighter GPT-6 models, limited uploads and images, ads in the US
BudgetNone neededGo: $8/mo, higher limits, still ad-supported in the US
Main paid tierNonePlus: $20/mo, ad-free, Deep Research, Work agent, Codex, images, voice
Power tierNonePro: $100, $200 or $500/mo with GPT-6 Astra in chat
BusinessAPI only, pay per tokenBusiness from $20/user/mo billed annually; Enterprise custom

Free does not mean equivalent. ChatGPT's free plan includes image generation and voice, which DeepSeek lacks, while DeepSeek's free plan gives you its best model and reasoning mode without a message meter you can see. If you only need text chat and reasoning, DeepSeek's free app is one of the most generous available. Our best free AI tools roundup lists other options.

API pricing: DeepSeek vs OpenAI

Developers are where DeepSeek's pricing matters most. DeepSeek uses peak and off-peak rates: peak hours are 01:00 to 04:00 and 06:00 to 10:00 UTC on weekdays, and off-peak prices are half of peak. Figures below are per 1M tokens from the official DeepSeek pricing page and OpenAI API pricing (standard tier, short context).

ModelInputCached inputOutput
DeepSeek Flash (V4.1), off-peak$0.15$0.003$0.60
DeepSeek Flash (V4.1), peak$0.30$0.006$1.20
DeepSeek V4-Pro, off-peak$0.66$0.022$1.98
DeepSeek V4-Pro, peak$1.32$0.044$3.96
OpenAI GPT-6 Luna$0.10$0.01$0.50
OpenAI GPT-6 Sol$2.00$0.20$10.00
OpenAI GPT-6 Astra$10.00$1.00$50.00

Two takeaways. First, DeepSeek is still dramatically cheaper than OpenAI's capable models: V4.1-Flash costs a small fraction of GPT-6 Sol for output tokens, and its cached input is close to free, which matters for agents that resend long contexts. Second, the old "DeepSeek is always cheapest" story no longer holds at the bottom end. GPT-6 Luna undercuts DeepSeek Flash on list price, though Luna is OpenAI's smallest model and is not built for the same depth of reasoning.

DeepSeek's API accepts both OpenAI and Anthropic request formats, so most existing SDKs and coding tools can switch by changing the base URL and key. Web search and page fetch through DeepSeek's API cost $0.75 per 1,000 successful requests each. Note that DeepSeek raised prices in August before cutting them in September, so check the live page before you budget.

Reasoning and coding

Reasoning

DeepSeek built its reputation on reasoning: its DeepThink mode shows a long chain of thought before answering, which is useful for math, logic puzzles and step-by-step analysis. V4.1 adds a reasoning effort setting in the API. ChatGPT's Thinking modes do the same job, and on the hardest benchmarks OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and other US frontier models still lead, by DeepSeek's own published comparison. For homework-level math or a business analysis, most users will find both good enough; for research-grade problems, GPT-6 Astra is the stronger tool.

Coding

In chat, DeepSeek is a capable programmer and very popular for code generation on a budget. Its strength in agent-style coding benchmarks is the main selling point of V4.1-Flash, and its API is widely used as a cheap backend for coding agents, including Claude Code and OpenAI Codex through compatible endpoints. DeepSeek also has a coding agent called Harness in developer preview.

ChatGPT's advantage is the product around the model. Plus includes OpenAI Codex, which runs tasks in cloud sandboxes or locally and returns pull requests, with GPT-6 Astra available inside it. If you want a finished coding workflow, ChatGPT is ahead; if you want the cheapest strong model to plug into your own tools, DeepSeek wins. Our best AI coding tools guide covers editors and agents in depth.

Winner: ChatGPT for the workflow, DeepSeek for cost.

Features beyond chat

ChatGPT is a much bigger product. It generates images with ChatGPT Images 2.0, holds real-time voice conversations, remembers context across chats, runs Deep Research reports and the Work agent, supports custom GPTs and projects, and connects to Google Drive, Microsoft 365, Slack and GitHub. Business and Enterprise plans add admin controls, SSO and data that is excluded from training by default.

DeepSeek's app is focused: chat, DeepThink, web search, file upload with text extraction, image understanding on the newer models and chat history sync. It does not generate images or video, and reviewers note it lacks the voice, research and agent features of ChatGPT. That focus is part of why it is free.

Winner: ChatGPT, clearly.

Censorship: what DeepSeek will not discuss

DeepSeek is a Chinese company, and its hosted app and API follow Chinese content rules. Since its 2025 breakout, users and researchers have documented that it refuses, deflects or gives government-aligned answers on topics such as the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown, Taiwan's status, Xinjiang and criticism of Chinese leaders. Sometimes it starts answering and then deletes the response.

For most coding, writing and business tasks, this never comes up. But it matters if you research politics, history or human rights, and it is a reminder that a model's answers reflect the rules of the company that serves it. Running the open weights yourself removes the app's live filter, though some of the bias is trained into the model. ChatGPT has its own content policies, but they are not shaped by Chinese state censorship.

Data privacy: data stored in China and government bans

This is the biggest practical difference between DeepSeek and ChatGPT for many users and almost all organizations.

What DeepSeek's privacy policy says

DeepSeek's privacy policy, updated February 10, 2026, says it collects, processes and stores personal data in the People's Republic of China. It collects your prompts, uploaded files, chat history, device and network information and approximate location, and uses your input to train its models. You have a right to opt out of training, but the policy points you to an email request rather than a simple toggle. It also says DeepSeek may share data with law enforcement and public authorities when it believes that is necessary. Chinese law can require companies to cooperate with state intelligence work, which is the core worry for governments.

Government bans

  • Italy: the data protection authority ordered DeepSeek to stop processing Italian users' data in January 2025.

  • Taiwan, Australia, the Czech Republic and others: banned DeepSeek on government devices or in public administration during 2025.

  • US states and agencies: Texas, New York and several federal departments banned it on government devices in 2025.

  • US federal civilian agencies: a Department of Homeland Security order signed July 24, 2026 and published in the Federal Register on October 20, 2026 requires civilian agencies to remove DeepSeek products, including third-party products built on DeepSeek, from their systems and procurements (summary from Akin Gump).

None of these bans stop private individuals from using DeepSeek. But if you work for a government agency, a contractor or a regulated company, check your policy before you paste anything into it.

ChatGPT's privacy picture

ChatGPT stores data in the US and other regions OpenAI operates in. Consumer conversations may be used for training unless you turn it off in Data Controls, and Temporary Chats are not saved to history. Business and Enterprise plans exclude data from training by default, and Enterprise offers data residency in several regions. ChatGPT is not risk-free (Free and Go show ads in the US, and US companies also respond to legal requests), but it is accepted by far more corporate and public-sector security teams.

Winner: ChatGPT.

Self-hosting DeepSeek: the open-weight advantage

DeepSeek's biggest structural advantage is that you do not have to use DeepSeek's servers at all. V4 and V4.1 weights are published on Hugging Face under the MIT license, so you can download, modify and run them commercially. That solves the data-residency problem: prompts never leave your infrastructure.

The catch is hardware. V4.1-Flash only activates a small share of its parameters per token, which keeps it fast, but all 552 billion parameters still have to sit in memory. Even at 8-bit precision that is roughly 550 GB, so you need a multi-GPU server or a cloud cluster, not a laptop. Quantized community builds reduce this, with some quality loss.

The easier middle ground is a US or EU host that runs DeepSeek's open weights for you. Many inference providers serve V4.1-Flash, and Together Chat offers free chat with open-source models hosted in North America. You get DeepSeek's model without sending data to China, usually at a slightly higher price than DeepSeek's own API.

ChatGPT's models cannot be self-hosted. OpenAI offers data residency and enterprise controls instead.

Pros and cons

FAQ

Is DeepSeek better than ChatGPT?

Not overall. DeepSeek matches or beats OpenAI's mid-tier models on some coding and reasoning tests at a far lower price, and its app is free. ChatGPT is the more complete product, with images, voice, agents and GPT-6 Astra at the top end, plus much stronger privacy and enterprise controls. DeepSeek wins on cost and openness; ChatGPT wins on everything else.

Is DeepSeek safe to use?

It depends on what you share. DeepSeek's privacy policy says data is stored in China, used for training and may be shared with authorities. For casual questions, code with no secrets or public information, many people accept that risk. For personal, client or business data, use ChatGPT, another US or EU service, or DeepSeek's open weights on a host you trust.

Why is DeepSeek banned in some countries?

Governments cite data security. DeepSeek stores data in China, where companies can be required to assist state intelligence work. Italy restricted it over GDPR concerns, and Taiwan, Australia, the Czech Republic and US agencies banned it on government systems. In 2026 the US Department of Homeland Security ordered its removal from all federal civilian agency systems. Private use remains legal.

Is DeepSeek free?

Yes. The DeepSeek chat app on the web, iOS and Android is free, with no paid plan and no ads, though it has unpublished limits during busy periods. The API is paid per token, with Flash costing $0.15 per 1M input tokens and $0.60 per 1M output tokens off-peak, and double during peak hours.

Can I run DeepSeek locally?

Yes, the weights are open under the MIT license. The full V4.1-Flash model has 552 billion parameters, so running it needs a multi-GPU server with hundreds of gigabytes of memory. Quantized community versions lower the requirement. Most individuals use a third-party host that runs the open weights in the US or EU instead.

Is DeepSeek better than ChatGPT for coding?

For cheap API-driven coding, DeepSeek is excellent and popular as a backend for coding agents. In chat, the two are close for everyday tasks. For a complete agentic workflow, ChatGPT Plus includes Codex with GPT-6 Astra, which is more mature than DeepSeek's Harness preview. Choose by budget and whether your code is sensitive.

Does DeepSeek censor answers?

Yes, on topics sensitive to the Chinese government. The hosted app and API refuse, deflect or give official-line answers about subjects like Tiananmen Square, Taiwan and Xinjiang. Everyday coding, writing and business questions are unaffected. Self-hosted open weights remove the live filter but can still reflect some trained-in bias.

Bottom line

DeepSeek is the best free and cheapest-to-scale option for text, reasoning and code, and its open weights are a gift to developers who want control. ChatGPT is the better assistant for nearly everyone else, with a far richer feature set and privacy terms that most workplaces accept. Use DeepSeek for non-sensitive work and low-cost API projects; use ChatGPT, or self-hosted DeepSeek, for anything you would not want stored on servers in China.
