Perplexity vs ChatGPT (2026): Which Is Better for Search and Research?

Short verdict: in the Perplexity vs ChatGPT debate, use Perplexity when you want a fast, sourced answer to a factual question, or when you need to see and check every source behind a research summary. Use ChatGPT when the job goes beyond finding information: writing, analyzing your own files, generating images, coding with Codex or running a long agent task. Both start at $20 a month, so the real question is whether finding sources or working with them is the bigger part of your day.

The two products have converged. ChatGPT searches the web and cites sources, and Perplexity now writes reports, builds files and runs agents. But their defaults still reveal different priorities. Perplexity is an answer engine that searches first and writes second. ChatGPT is a general assistant that decides when to search. This comparison is based on official pricing and help pages, published third-party studies and public user feedback, not our own hands-on benchmark. Plans change often, so confirm figures on the pages linked below.

Quick verdict by use case

  • Quick factual questions with sources: Perplexity.

  • Current events, prices, product specs and news: Perplexity, because every answer is grounded in fresh search results.

  • Long research reports: close. Perplexity Research shows its sources more clearly; ChatGPT Deep Research and the Work agent turn findings into finished documents.

  • Writing, editing and rewriting: ChatGPT.

  • Analyzing your own PDFs, spreadsheets and data: ChatGPT.

  • Images: ChatGPT, with ChatGPT Images 2.0.

  • An AI browser that acts on web pages: Perplexity, with the free Comet browser.

  • Access to many different AI models in one subscription: Perplexity Pro, which lets you pick models from several labs.

  • Coding: ChatGPT, with Codex included in Plus.

What each tool actually is

Perplexity in one paragraph

Perplexity is an AI answer engine. Ask a question and it runs live web searches, reads the results and writes a short answer with numbered citations you can click. Pro Search digs deeper with multiple searches, Research mode (its Deep Research) produces long reports, Spaces keep files and instructions together for a project, and its file and app creation tools (formerly Labs) build documents, dashboards and simple apps. Paid plans let you choose the underlying model from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI or Perplexity's own Sonar models. It also makes the Comet browser and an agent product called Perplexity Computer.

ChatGPT in one paragraph

ChatGPT is OpenAI's general-purpose assistant, now split into three surfaces: Chat for conversation, Work for longer agent jobs that produce documents, spreadsheets and presentations, and Codex for software development. It runs OpenAI's GPT-6 family (Luna, Sol and the flagship Astra), searches the web when needed, analyzes uploaded files, generates images, holds voice conversations and remembers context across chats. Our Claude vs ChatGPT and ChatGPT vs Gemini comparisons cover its other big rivals.

Pricing: Perplexity Pro and Max vs ChatGPT plans (as of October 2026)

Perplexity figures come from its help center articles on Perplexity Pro and Perplexity Max. ChatGPT figures come from ChatGPT pricing and OpenAI's help center. US prices.

TierPerplexityChatGPT
Free$0. Unlimited basic searches, a few Pro Searches per day, very limited Research, free Comet browser$0. Lighter GPT-6 models, web search, limited uploads and images, ads in the US
BudgetEducation Pro: $10/mo for verified studentsGo: $8/mo. Higher limits than Free, still ad-supported in the US
Main paid tierPro: $20/mo or $200/yr. Pro Search, Research, model picker, image generation, Comet Plus includedPlus: $20/mo. Ad-free, GPT-6 Sol in chat, Deep Research, Work and Codex with GPT-6 Astra
Power tierMax: $200/mo or $2,000/yr. Highest model access, 10,000 Computer credits/mo, top Comet limitsPro: $100, $200 or $500/mo. GPT-6 Astra in chat, 5x to 25x Plus usage
BusinessEnterprise Pro $40/seat/mo; Enterprise Max $325/seat/moBusiness from $20/user/mo billed annually

At $20 the two plans are priced the same, but they buy different things. Perplexity Pro buys you search depth and a choice of models. ChatGPT Plus buys you OpenAI's full product suite: Work, Codex, images, voice and memory. Perplexity's annual plan is cheaper per month ($200 a year), while ChatGPT Plus is month to month only.

At the top, Perplexity Max at $200 is mainly about Perplexity Computer credits and the highest model limits. ChatGPT Pro tiers are about heavy use of GPT-6 Astra in chat, Work and Codex. OpenAI paused new sign-ups for its $200 tier in September during the Astra rollout and added a $500 tier on September 29, so check availability before you upgrade.

Search accuracy and citations

This is the heart of the Perplexity vs ChatGPT question, and it is where Perplexity was built to win. Every Perplexity answer lists its sources, and the citations sit inline next to the claims they support, so you can verify a number in one click. ChatGPT also cites sources when it searches, but it does not search on every query, and answers drawn from the model's training data come without citations at all.

Independent testing backs up the difference, with caveats. In a March 2025 study by Columbia Journalism Review's Tow Center, researchers gave eight AI search tools excerpts from news articles and asked them to identify the source. Perplexity answered 37 percent of queries incorrectly, the best result in the test, while ChatGPT Search got 134 of 200 wrong. The same CJR study found that all the tools were often confidently wrong, and the models have changed a lot since then, so treat it as a signal about design rather than a current scorecard.

What this means in practice: Perplexity makes it easier to check its work, not impossible for it to be wrong. Both tools sometimes cite a real page for a claim the page does not make. For anything that matters (a statistic, a quote, a legal or medical fact), click through and read the source.

Winner: Perplexity.

Deep Research: Perplexity Research vs ChatGPT Deep Research

Both products have a mode that runs dozens of searches, reads many pages and writes a structured report with citations. They differ in output and in how much they let you see.

Perplexity Research

Perplexity's Research mode shows the searches it runs and the sources it reads as it works, then returns a report with dense inline citations. Reports are typically shorter and more source-heavy than ChatGPT's. Pro includes extended Research access; Max raises the limits and runs Research on more powerful models. Free users get a taste, with very limited monthly Research queries.

ChatGPT Deep Research and Work

ChatGPT's Deep Research has been refined since early 2025 and tends to produce longer, more analytical reports that synthesize and argue rather than summarize. Plus includes a monthly allowance, with far more on Pro. For deliverables, the newer ChatGPT Work agent can take a research task and produce a finished document, spreadsheet or slide deck, which Perplexity can approximate with its file and app tools but less smoothly.

Winner: tie. Perplexity for traceable, source-first research; ChatGPT for synthesis and finished deliverables. For academic papers specifically, tools like Consensus and Elicit beat both; see our best AI research tools guide.

Comet browser vs ChatGPT's browsing

Perplexity's Comet is a Chromium-based browser with the Comet Assistant built in. It can summarize the page you are on, compare tabs, fill in forms, and carry out multi-step tasks on websites. Comet has been free to download for everyone since October 2025; the assistant's agent queries are metered, with monthly limits on Pro and the highest limits on Max. Comet Plus, a $5 a month add-on for premium publisher content, is included with Pro and Max.

OpenAI went the other way. It launched the ChatGPT Atlas browser on macOS in October 2025, then retired it and cancelled the Windows version, folding the in-app browser and agent features into the ChatGPT desktop app alongside Work and Codex. Agent features remain tied to paid ChatGPT plans.

Be careful with any AI browser agent. OpenAI itself warned at the Atlas launch that browser agents are vulnerable to prompt injection hidden in web pages. Do not let an agent act on banking, email or admin pages without watching it.

Winner: Perplexity, if you want a dedicated AI browser.

Writing, analysis and everything else

Outside of search, ChatGPT is the more capable product. It writes and edits long documents more fluently, follows formatting instructions closely, and keeps context across a long conversation. Its file analysis (spreadsheets, PDFs, charts and code execution) is more mature. It generates images with ChatGPT Images 2.0, holds natural voice conversations, remembers your preferences across chats, and includes OpenAI Codex for coding.

Perplexity can write, and with Pro you can even choose the same OpenAI or Anthropic models ChatGPT and Claude use. But its interface is tuned for questions and answers. It tends to keep responses short and search-grounded, which is great for facts and less great for a 2,000-word draft or a back-and-forth editing session. Image generation is included on paid plans, and video generation is limited.

Winner: ChatGPT.

Agents: Perplexity Computer vs ChatGPT Work

Both companies now sell an agent for long, multi-step jobs. Perplexity Computer, launched in February 2026, runs tasks in an isolated cloud environment with a browser, a file system and hundreds of app integrations, routing each subtask to a different model. Max includes 10,000 credits a month, and access was later extended to Pro users without a monthly credit allowance. Heavy tasks can burn thousands of credits.

ChatGPT Work is included with Plus and above, uses your plan allowance rather than separate credits, and can act across files and apps including Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. For most people already paying for Plus, Work is the cheaper way to try agentic research and document creation.

Winner: ChatGPT on value; Perplexity if you want model routing across many vendors.

FAQ

Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT?

For search and source-backed answers, yes. Perplexity searches on every query and cites every claim, and it scored best in a 2025 Columbia Journalism Review test of AI search citations. For writing, file analysis, images, coding and agents, ChatGPT is better. Most people who use both treat Perplexity as a search engine and ChatGPT as a workspace.

Is Perplexity Pro worth it compared to ChatGPT Plus?

Both cost $20 a month, and Perplexity Pro is $200 a year if paid annually. Perplexity Pro is worth it if you mostly search and research and want a choice of AI models. ChatGPT Plus is worth it if you want a full assistant with Work, Codex, images and voice. If you can only pay for one, pick based on what you do most.

Does Perplexity use ChatGPT?

Perplexity is a separate company with its own Sonar models, but paid plans let you choose models from other labs, including OpenAI's GPT models, Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini. So a Perplexity Pro answer can run on an OpenAI model, while the search, citations and interface remain Perplexity's own.

Which is more accurate, Perplexity or ChatGPT?

For questions about current facts, Perplexity is usually easier to trust because every answer is tied to sources you can check. In the 2025 Tow Center test it misidentified news sources 37 percent of the time versus 67 percent for ChatGPT Search. Neither is reliable enough to skip checking sources on anything important.

Is the Comet browser free?

Yes. Perplexity made Comet free for everyone in October 2025. The built-in assistant has usage limits, with monthly agent query limits on Pro and the highest limits on Max. Comet Plus, a $5 a month add-on for premium publisher content, is included with Pro and Max subscriptions.

Which is better for students, Perplexity or ChatGPT?

Perplexity is better for finding and citing sources, and verified students can get Education Pro for $10 a month. ChatGPT is better for explaining concepts step by step, giving feedback on drafts and tutoring by voice. Many students use Perplexity to research and ChatGPT to study, while checking every citation before submitting work.

Is Perplexity Max worth $200 a month?

Only for heavy users. Max adds the highest access to frontier models, 10,000 Perplexity Computer credits a month and the top Comet assistant limits. If you do not run long agent tasks every week, Perplexity Pro at $20 covers search and research for most people.

Final verdict

Perplexity is the better search tool: faster to a sourced answer, easier to verify, and the only one of the two with a dedicated AI browser. ChatGPT is the better assistant: stronger at writing, analysis, images, coding and agent work that ends in a finished file. If you mostly look things up, start with Perplexity. If you mostly make things, start with ChatGPT. If you can afford one paid plan and one free tier, Perplexity free plus ChatGPT Plus is a strong combination.
