Adobe Firefly Review (2026): Commercially Safe AI, Credits and Plans
Our Adobe Firefly review for 2026: Firefly Image 5, the partner models from Google, OpenAI, Black Forest Labs, Runway and Kling, video and audio tools, Boards, the AI Assistant beta, custom models, what each plan's credits really buy, and when Midjourney or Leonardo AI is the better choice.
Verdict: in this Adobe Firefly review, the bottom line is that Adobe Firefly is the best AI image and video platform for teams that care about licensing and already work in Adobe apps. Adobe's own Firefly models are trained on licensed Adobe Stock and public domain content, outputs carry Content Credentials, and the same app now gives you partner models such as Nano Banana, GPT Image, FLUX, Runway, Kling and ElevenLabs. Buy it if you are a brand, agency or Creative Cloud user. Skip it if you want the most artistic images per dollar (Midjourney) or the most control on a free plan (Leonardo AI).
Firefly is no longer just a text-to-image toy. In 2026 it is a hub for image, video, audio and vector generation, with Firefly Image 5, Firefly Boards, mobile apps, a Firefly AI Assistant in public beta since April 27, and Firefly Custom Models in public beta. Pricing changed too, with a new Pro Plus tier. This review is based on Adobe's official Firefly product, plans and feature pages, plus public user feedback as of October 2026. We did not run hands-on benchmark tests.

What Adobe Firefly is, and what changed in 2026
Adobe launched Firefly in 2023 with a clear pitch: generative AI that is safe for commercial use because it is trained on content Adobe has rights to, not scraped from the web. That pitch still defines it. According to the Firefly product page, Adobe's models are trained on licensed Adobe Stock and public domain content, and Adobe does not train on users' personal or generated content.
What changed is everything around the models. Firefly is now a multi-model app: you can pick Adobe's Firefly Image 5 or a partner model such as Gemini 3.1 with Nano Banana 2, GPT Image 1.5 or FLUX.2 [pro] from the same dropdown. Video, sound effects, music, speech and translation tools sit alongside image generation. Firefly Boards gives you an infinite canvas for mood boards and storyboards. The Firefly AI Assistant entered public beta on April 27, 2026, and Firefly Custom Models let you train on your own images.
Key features, in depth
Text to image with Firefly Image 5
Firefly Image 5 is Adobe's current image model. It produces photorealistic and illustrated images with good lighting and texture, and you can guide it with style and composition references, image-to-image and sketch-to-image. Generated images open straight into an Edit Image workspace with Generative Fill, Generative Expand, Generative Remove and Prompt to Edit, so small fixes do not require a new generation. Public feedback says Image 5 is a clear step up from earlier Firefly models, especially for people and product shots, but most reviewers still place Midjourney ahead for pure artistic impact.
Partner models in one app
This is the biggest change for buyers. Instead of choosing between Adobe's safety and other labs' capabilities, Firefly lets you use both. Image partners include Google's Nano Banana models, OpenAI's GPT Image and Black Forest Labs' FLUX. Video partners include Runway, Kling AI, Luma AI and Topaz Astra, and ElevenLabs powers audio. One important caveat from Adobe's own partner models page: it is the creator's responsibility to decide whether a partner model is appropriate for a project, including whether it is safe for commercial use. Adobe's commercially safe positioning applies to its own Firefly models.
Generative Fill and Creative Cloud integration
Firefly's real advantage is where it lives. Generative Fill and Generative Expand in Adobe Photoshop, text-to-vector and recoloring in Adobe Illustrator, quick designs in Adobe Express and Generative Extend in Adobe Premiere Pro all run on Firefly. For designers, that means AI happens inside the files they already work on, with layers, masks and selections, instead of in a separate app. Paid Firefly plans include unlimited standard image features such as Generative Fill.
Video generation
Firefly's video tools cover text-to-video, image-to-video, animation, upscaling and translation, plus talking avatars. Plans count video in five-second clips: Standard includes up to 20 clips a month, Pro 40, Pro Plus 100, and Premium includes unlimited use of the Firefly Video Model in Generate Video. Partner video models such as Runway, Kling and Luma use credits. For dedicated video work, compare our Runway review and Kling AI review.
Audio: speech, sound effects, music and translation
Firefly now generates speech, sound effects and music, and translates audio and video into other languages. Allowances scale with the plan, from up to 200 sound effects, 100 minutes of music and 6 minutes of translation on Standard to 5,000 sound effects, 2,500 minutes of music and 166 minutes of translation on Premium. That makes Firefly a reasonable one-stop shop for social video teams, although specialists such as ElevenLabs offer more voice control.
Firefly Boards
Boards is an infinite canvas for mood boards, storyboards and campaign exploration. You can generate with different models side by side, arrange references and share the board with collaborators. Boards is unlimited on all paid plans, and it is one of the most practical features for art directors who used to stitch together Midjourney outputs in Figma or Miro.
Firefly AI Assistant (beta)
The AI Assistant is a conversational agent. You describe a project, and it uses tools from Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and Lightroom to complete multistep work, with a Creative Skills library of prebuilt workflows such as Portrait Retouch, Social Media Assets and Mockup Studio. You can redirect it at any step. It is in public beta and limited to Creative Cloud Pro subscribers and Firefly Pro, Pro Plus and Premium plans, and Adobe notes that some features shown in its preview video are not yet available.
Firefly Custom Models (beta)
Custom Models let you train a private model on 10 to 30 of your own JPG or PNG images (each at least 1,000 pixels wide) so outputs match a style, character or tone. Training costs 500 generative credits per model, and each image generated with it costs 20 credits. Models cannot be retrained, so you create a new one to update it. It is available in public beta on paid individual Creative Cloud plans and Creative Cloud Pro and Pro Plus for teams, subject to region.
Content Credentials and mobile
Firefly outputs include Content Credentials, metadata that records when AI was used to create or edit a file. That helps with platform disclosure rules and client transparency. Firefly is also available as iOS and Android apps and on mobile web, so you can generate and edit on the go.
Adobe Firefly pricing in 2026
Firefly uses generative credits. Standard image features are unlimited on paid plans; premium features such as video, audio and partner models use credits. Credits reset monthly and do not roll over. US prices below are monthly as of October 2026; Adobe localizes pricing by country and often offers annual and promotional rates, so confirm on the official Firefly plans page.
| Plan | US price | Credits a month | Video (5-second clips) | Audio allowances | Extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited daily generations | Limited | Limited | Try Firefly and some partner models |
| Standard | $9.99/mo | 2,000 | Up to 20 | 200 sound effects, 100 min music, 6 min translation | Unlimited standard image features and Boards |
| Pro | $19.99/mo | 4,000 | Up to 40 | 400 sound effects, 200 min music, 13 min translation | Adds Adobe Express Premium and Photoshop on web and mobile; AI Assistant beta |
| Pro Plus | $49.99/mo | 10,000 | Up to 100 | 1,000 sound effects, 500 min music, 33 min translation | Same apps as Pro |
| Premium | $199.99/mo | 50,000 | Unlimited Firefly Video Model | 5,000 sound effects, 2,500 min music, 166 min translation | For heavy video producers |
Team versions of Pro, Pro Plus and Premium add admin tools and 24x7 support, billed per license on annual plans. Firefly credits also come bundled with Creative Cloud plans, including the Photoshop plan ($22.99/mo on an annual plan in the US) and Creative Cloud Pro, though the Photoshop plan's monthly allowance is small.
Which plan should you buy? If you mainly use Generative Fill and Firefly Image 5, Standard is enough because standard image features are unlimited. Pick Pro if you want Photoshop on web and mobile plus Express Premium, or if you want the AI Assistant. Pro Plus suits creators who regularly use partner models or video. Premium is only worth it for teams producing large volumes of video.
One billing warning: Adobe's annual plans paid monthly have historically charged an early termination fee if you cancel mid-term, so check the plan terms before you commit.
Is Adobe Firefly free?
Yes, Firefly has a free plan with limited daily generations across image, video and audio, including access to some partner models such as Nano Banana and Luma's Ray model, according to Adobe's plans page. Adobe does not publish a fixed number of free daily generations. The free plan is fine for testing; regular use quickly points to Standard or a Creative Cloud plan.
Is Adobe Firefly commercially safe?
Adobe describes its own Firefly models as commercially safe because they are trained on licensed Adobe Stock and public domain content, and Adobe does not train on customer content. Enterprise customers can also negotiate additional protections with Adobe. Two caveats matter. First, partner models are not covered by that positioning; Adobe says creators must judge whether a partner model suits their project. Second, commercially safe training data does not make an output copyrightable: purely AI-generated images generally cannot be registered for copyright in the US, and you still need to avoid generating trademarks or likenesses.
Pros and cons
Pros
Licensed training data for Adobe's own models, plus Content Credentials.
Deep Creative Cloud integration in Photoshop, Illustrator, Express and Premiere Pro.
Partner models from Google, OpenAI, Black Forest Labs, Runway, Kling and ElevenLabs in one app.
Unlimited standard image features and Boards on every paid plan.
Image, video, audio and vector generation under one subscription.
Custom Models and AI Assistant for brand-specific and multistep work.
Cons
Less artistic than Midjourney for stylized and cinematic images.
Credits do not roll over, and premium features consume them fast.
Partner models are not covered by Adobe's commercial safety positioning.
Strict content filters block public figures, brands and some harmless prompts.
Plan complexity: Firefly plans, Creative Cloud plans and team plans overlap.
Common complaints from users
Credit confusion. Users struggle to tell which features are unlimited and which use credits, especially in Photoshop versus the Firefly web app.
Running out of credits on video. A handful of partner video generations can use a large share of a month's credits.
Over-cautious moderation. Prompts mentioning real people, brands or certain words get refused, which frustrates editorial users.
Generic results. Firefly's own models can look polished but safe, which is why many creators switch to partner models or Midjourney for concept art.
Adobe account and cancellation friction, a long-running complaint about Adobe subscriptions in general.

FAQ
Is Adobe Firefly free?
Yes. Adobe Firefly has a free plan with limited daily generations across image, video and audio, including some partner models. Adobe does not publish an exact daily number. Paid plans start at $9.99 a month in the US for Standard, which adds 2,000 monthly credits plus unlimited standard image features such as Generative Fill.
Is Adobe Firefly good?
Yes, especially for professional and commercial work. Firefly Image 5 produces clean, realistic images, editing inside Photoshop is excellent, and partner models add flexibility. It is less artistic than Midjourney and its credits can be confusing, but no other platform combines licensed training data, Creative Cloud integration and image, video and audio tools in one subscription.
Is Adobe Firefly better than Midjourney?
Firefly is better for commercial safety, editing existing images, Creative Cloud workflows, video and audio. Midjourney is better for striking, stylized images and consistent personal styles. A brand team producing ads will usually prefer Firefly, while a concept artist or illustrator will usually prefer Midjourney. Many professionals use both.
Can I use Adobe Firefly images commercially?
Yes. Adobe positions images from its own Firefly models as safe for commercial use because the models are trained on licensed and public domain content. Outputs from partner models such as GPT Image or FLUX follow those providers' terms, and Adobe says creators must decide whether they suit a project. Avoid generating trademarks and real people.
How many credits does Adobe Firefly use per image?
On paid plans, standard image features such as Generative Fill do not use credits. Premium features, including partner models, video and audio, do, and the cost varies by model and output. Custom Models are a published example: training costs 500 credits and each image costs 20 credits. Check the credit cost shown in the app before generating.
Do Firefly credits roll over?
No. Firefly generative credits reset each month and unused credits do not roll over. If you regularly run out, upgrading to a higher plan is usually cheaper than buying add-ons, and if you regularly have credits left, a lower plan may be enough.
Final verdict
Adobe Firefly is the safest bet in 2026 for professionals who need AI images and video they can defend to a client or legal team, and it is the most convenient option for anyone who already lives in Photoshop or Premiere Pro. Firefly Image 5 is good, partner models fill the gaps, and Boards, Custom Models and the AI Assistant point toward a full creative workspace. It will not out-dazzle Midjourney, and its credit system needs attention. Start on the free plan, move to Standard for unlimited standard image features, and step up to Pro or Pro Plus when partner models and video become part of your weekly work.
