Ideogram Review (2026): The Best AI Image Generator for Text?
Our Ideogram review for 2026: Ideogram 4.5 and its precise editing, the open-weight Ideogram 4.0, editable text layers in Studio, transparent backgrounds, Batch, video, what the free plan and paid credits really get you, and when Midjourney, FLUX or Canva is a better fit.
Verdict: this Ideogram review lands where most designers already have: Ideogram is the best AI image generator for images that contain words. Posters, YouTube thumbnails, social graphics, t-shirts, menus, packaging mockups and logo ideas come out with readable, well-placed text far more often than in Midjourney, and Studio lets you turn rendered text into editable layers when a letter is wrong. It also has a usable free plan. Skip it if your priority is painterly art direction (Midjourney) or a full design layout tool (Canva).
Ideogram had a big 2026. It released open weights for Ideogram 4.0 on June 3, launched Ideogram 4.5 on September 30 as its most precise edit model, replaced its old Canvas with a layer-based Studio, added a Video app with Seedance and Kling, and put partner models such as GPT Image and Nano Banana inside the same picker. This review is based on Ideogram's official documentation, pricing page and model guide, plus public user feedback as of October 2026. We have not run our own benchmark tests.

What Ideogram is, and what changed in 2026
Ideogram was founded in 2022 by former Google Brain researchers, including Mohammad Norouzi, William Chan, Chitwan Saharia and Jonathan Ho, several of whom worked on Google's Imagen. The company's first public model in 2023 was notable for one thing: it could spell. Every version since has pushed further on typography and graphic design.
Ideogram 4.0 (June 3, 2026): a new model with very wide aspect ratios such as 3:1 and 23:9 for banners and headers. Ideogram published its weights on Hugging Face under an Ideogram 4 Non-Commercial license, so you can run it yourself for non-commercial use.
Ideogram 4.5 (September 30, 2026): described by Ideogram as its most precise edit model. It accepts up to five reference images, keeps details intact across multi-turn edits, handles photo restoration and character consistency, and takes text or JSON prompts up to 10,000 characters.
Studio: a layer-based editor that replaced the old Canvas and Magic Fill tools.
Video app: short videos with sound from Seedance and Kling models.
Partner models: GPT Image 2.0 and 2.5, Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro run inside Ideogram as premium options.
Key features, in depth
Text rendering and typography
This is why people choose Ideogram. Its text-in-images guide gives a simple recipe that works: put the exact words in quotation marks, mention them early in the prompt, say where the text sits ("curving along the bottom", "large headline at the top"), and describe the lettering by weight and mood, such as bold sans-serif or thin rounded Bauhaus, rather than by font name. Keep phrases short and scenes simple, and list multiple text blocks from top to bottom.
Ideogram is honest about the limits. English works best, non-Latin scripts and accented letters can still come out wrong, and long paragraphs raise the risk of typos. In practice, a headline, a subhead and a short call to action are reliable; a full restaurant menu usually needs a fix or two. Rivals like GPT Image and Nano Banana Pro have narrowed the gap, which is partly why Ideogram now hosts them too.
JSON prompts and layout control
On Ideogram 4.5 and 4.0 you can write a structured JSON prompt that defines a scene and a list of text elements, each with its own words, visual description, color palette and bounding box. It is the closest thing to a layout tool inside an image generator, and it is very useful for ad templates, thumbnails and product banners where the headline must sit in a specific spot. Ideogram notes that JSON guides the composition but does not guarantee it, so always check placement and spelling.
Ideogram 4.5 editing and references
Ideogram 4.5 is built for edits rather than only fresh generations. You can attach up to five reference images to combine a product, a person and a background, use Precise Edit with a mask to change one area, control the background, and restore old photos. Quality settings range from very low (references only) to high, at 1K or 2K. The main pitch is less drift: details such as a face, label or logo stay put across several rounds of edits.
Studio and layerized text
Studio is Ideogram's editor, and its standout trick is Layerize text. It finds the text in an image and turns it into editable text layers, so you can fix a typo, swap a word or restyle a headline without regenerating the picture. Studio also supports image layers, pasting in extra images, extending the canvas (up to 2,048 pixels on the long side) and selecting an area to change. Extend and Select area need a paid plan. No other major image generator offers editable text layers this directly.
Ideogram 3.0, styles and transparent backgrounds
Ideogram 3.0 is still the only model in the app with style presets, style reference images, negative prompts and color palettes, and Ideogram recommends it for logos. The Transparent versions of 4.0 and 3.0 output PNGs with no background, ready for stickers, merch, logos and overlays. Ideogram 4.0 Transparent can output up to 8K, though anything above 2K is upscaled after generation.
Batch, custom models and Describe
Batch (on Pro) runs up to 500 prompts from a spreadsheet, which is ideal for ad variants, product lines and localized social posts. Custom models train on your brand, product or style. Describe turns any image into a reusable prompt, and Remix, Upscale and Remove background or objects cover everyday editing.
Video
The Video app is a premium feature that needs a paid plan or bought credits. It runs partner models: Seedance 2.5 (4 to 30 seconds), Seedance 2.0, Kling v3 Standard (3 to 15 seconds) and MiniMax H3. You can start from a prompt, animate a start and end frame, or use reference images, clips and audio on Seedance and MiniMax. Generated sound is on by default for Seedance and Kling. It is convenient, but if video is your main job, a dedicated tool is a better fit; see Runway vs Kling vs Luma.
API and open weights
Ideogram has an official API with endpoints for its own models, transparent images, edits, custom models and partner models, plus an MCP integration for AI agents. Pay-as-you-go credits cost 1 cent each. The Ideogram 4 weights on Hugging Face (including fp8 and smaller nf4 builds) let developers run the model locally, but the license is non-commercial, so business use still goes through Ideogram's hosted products or a separate agreement.
Ideogram pricing in 2026
Ideogram sells priority credits. Each generation costs credits based on the model, quality, size and number of images, and the app shows a quote before you generate (Settings, then Usage costs, lists current rates). Prices below are as of October 2026, from Ideogram's plans and credits page.
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly | Credits | Key features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 30 a week | All images public; wait for weekly refill or buy credits |
| Plus | $20 | $15/mo ($180/yr) | 2,400 a month | Private generation, quality export, unlimited slower queue |
| Pro | $60 | $42/mo ($504/yr) | 7,500 a month | Adds Batch Generation and a larger queue |
| Team | $30 per user | $20 per user/mo | 3,600 per user | Central billing and admin; minimum 2 users |
| Pay as you go | No subscription | N/A | $0.01 per credit | Buy credits as needed, with auto recharge |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom terms, prepaid or postpaid |
The important detail is what happens when credits run out. On Plus, Pro and Team you can keep generating in a slower queue with no limit, but only on Ideogram's own models. Custom models, partner models, reference-image generations, image edits and upscales always require credits. If most of your work is editing with references on Ideogram 4.5 or using GPT Image and Nano Banana, budget as if there is no unlimited queue. The legacy Basic plan ($8/mo) still exists for current subscribers but is no longer sold.
Is Ideogram free?
Yes. The free plan gives you 30 credits a week, enough to test models and make a few graphics. Everything created on the free plan is public. When the credits run out, you wait for the weekly refill or buy pay-as-you-go credits. For regular business use, Plus at $15 a month billed yearly is the realistic entry point because it adds private generation and the unlimited slow queue.
Commercial use and privacy
Ideogram's terms allow broad use of what you generate, but its own docs recommend reading the Terms of Service before commercial use, and you should. Free-plan images are public, so businesses usually pick Plus or higher. The downloadable Ideogram 4 weights are a separate matter: their license is non-commercial. As with every AI generator, purely AI-generated images generally cannot be registered for copyright in the US, which matters for logos. Our guide to the best AI logo generators covers trademark issues.
Pros and cons

Cons
Less artistic than Midjourney for painterly or cinematic work.
Edits, references and partner models always cost credits, even on paid plans.
Long text and non-Latin scripts still produce errors.
Free images are public.
Model sprawl: choosing between 4.5, 4.0, 3.0, Transparent and partner models takes learning.
Common complaints from users
Credits disappear faster than expected when users rely on edits, references or partner models that sit outside the slow queue.
Photorealism and crowded scenes are weaker than the best photo models, according to many reviewers.
Occasional misspellings in longer copy, which means a trip to Studio.
Slow free queue and the public-by-default free plan.
Feature names keep changing. Canvas and Magic Fill became Studio, so older tutorials are out of date.

FAQ
Is Ideogram free to use?
Yes. Ideogram's free plan includes 30 credits a week, and everything you create on it is public. When the credits run out, you wait for the weekly refill or buy pay-as-you-go credits at 1 cent each. For private images and an unlimited slower queue on Ideogram's own models, you need Plus at $20 a month, or $15 billed yearly.
Is Ideogram better than Midjourney?
Ideogram is better for images with text, such as posters, thumbnails, logos and ads, and it has a free plan and an API. Midjourney is better for artistic quality, lighting and consistent personal styles. If readable words are essential, choose Ideogram. If the image needs to look stunning and text is minimal, choose Midjourney.
What is the latest Ideogram model?
As of October 2026, the newest model is Ideogram 4.5, released on September 30, 2026. It focuses on precise editing, accepts up to five reference images and supports prompts up to 10,000 characters. Ideogram 4.0, released in June 2026, remains available for very wide formats, and Ideogram 3.0 is still the model with style presets and palettes.
Can I use Ideogram images commercially?
Ideogram's terms permit broad use of your generations, but read the current Terms of Service for your plan before commercial use. Free images are public, so businesses usually choose Plus or above. The downloadable Ideogram 4 model weights use a non-commercial license. Remember that purely AI-generated images generally cannot be copyrighted in the US.
How do I fix misspelled text in Ideogram?
First try regenerating, shortening the words or moving the text earlier in the prompt. If the image is otherwise right, open it in Studio and use Layerize text to turn the text into editable layers, then correct the wording. On paid plans you can also use Select area to redraw one region.
Does Ideogram have an API?
Yes. Ideogram offers an official API with endpoints for Ideogram 4.5, 4.0 and 3.0, transparent images, edits, custom models and partner models, billed per credit. It also has an MCP integration for AI agents. Developers can download Ideogram 4 weights from Hugging Face for non-commercial use.
Can Ideogram make videos?
Yes, through its Video app, which runs partner models including Seedance 2.5, Seedance 2.0, Kling v3 Standard and MiniMax H3. Clips run from a few seconds up to 30 seconds on Seedance 2.5, with generated sound on most models. Video needs a paid plan or purchased credits.
Final verdict
Ideogram is the tool to open whenever an image needs words. Its text rendering, layerized text in Studio, JSON layouts and transparent models make it the most practical AI image generator for marketers and designers in 2026, and Ideogram 4.5 adds dependable multi-step editing. The catches are a lower artistic ceiling than Midjourney, credits that disappear quickly on edits and partner models, and a public free plan. Start free, move to Plus when you need privacy, and pair Ideogram with Midjourney or Canva when a project needs both art and layout.
