Midjourney Review (2026): Is V8.2 Still the Best AI Image Generator?

Our Midjourney review for 2026 covers V8.2, the new edit model, Thinking Mode, video, real plan costs, commercial rules and the complaints users keep raising, plus when Ideogram, FLUX, Leonardo AI or Adobe Firefly is the smarter pick.

Verdict: this Midjourney review comes down to one sentence. Midjourney is still the best AI image generator for people who care how an image looks, and V8.2 made it faster, better at following prompts and much easier to edit. Buy it if you make concept art, editorial illustration, fashion, mood boards or any work where art direction matters. Skip it if you need a free plan, an API, long text inside images, or private images on a budget.

Midjourney had its busiest year yet in 2026: V8 arrived in alpha in March, V8.2 became the default on July 24, an instruction-based edit model shipped in August, and on October 8 the company started testing a Thinking Mode that checks images against your prompt and regenerates the misses. This review is based on Midjourney's official release notes and documentation, its plan pages, and public user feedback as of October 2026. We have not run our own benchmark tests.

Midjourney review at a glance

  • What it is: an independent AI lab's image and short video generator, used mainly on the midjourney.com web app, with Discord still supported.

  • Current model: V8.2 (default since July 24, 2026), plus Niji 7 for anime and older versions on request.

  • Best for: artists, designers, art directors, marketers and hobbyists who want striking images with little prompting.

  • Price: from $10/mo (Basic) to $120/mo (Mega). No free plan and no free trial.

  • Standout features: personalization profiles, style references (srefs), moodboards, draft mode, the V8.2 edit model and image-to-video.

  • Weak spots: no official API, images are public unless you pay for Pro or Mega, and text beyond a short phrase is still unreliable.

What Midjourney is, and what changed in 2026

Midjourney is a small, self-funded research lab founded by David Holz, and its product has always been built around taste rather than precision. You describe an image, Midjourney returns a grid of options, and you steer by varying, editing and upscaling the ones you like. For years that meant typing /imagine in Discord. In 2026 the web app is the main interface, and new features usually land on the website and the alpha site first.

Here is what changed this year:

  • V8 (March 17, alpha): a rebuilt model that Midjourney says renders standard jobs about four to five times faster than earlier versions, follows long prompts better, renders short quoted text more reliably, and adds an HD mode that outputs native 2K images.

  • V8.1 (April 30, then default on June 10): refined speed and quality and made HD cheaper to run.

  • V8.2 (default since July 24): focused on aesthetics, fewer low-quality outputs in odd situations, and better personalization drawn from a larger image pool.

  • Edit model for V8 (late August): edits from plain-language instructions, up to four reference images (replacing omni-reference), inpainting and outpainting.

  • September update: targeted edits now change only the pixels you select, --tile no longer leaves seams on V8.1 and V8.2, and a Styles sidebar can preview your prompt across saved styles.

  • Thinking Mode (October 8, alpha test): a Rerun (Thinking) button that checks a V8.2 image for wrong objects, layout, anatomy or text and regenerates it. Shared folders arrived the same week.

Key features, in depth

Image quality and the Midjourney look

Midjourney's reputation rests on its default aesthetic: rich lighting, believable texture, confident color and composition that feels designed. Public feedback in 2026 still ranks it as the reference point for artistic quality, and V8.2 leaned further into bold, fresh looks.

That strength is also its main trade-off. Midjourney has opinions, and it beautifies your image whether you asked for it or not. Photographers and product teams often add --raw and lower --stylize to get a plainer, more literal result. If you need a neutral catalog shot that matches a brief exactly, other tools are easier to control.

Personalization, style references and moodboards

This is where Midjourney pulls furthest ahead. Personalization learns your taste from image pairs you rate, then applies it with --p. Moodboards do the same from images you upload. Style references (--sref) copy the look of an image or a numeric style code without copying its content, and --sref random lets you discover new styles. Combined, they let you hold a consistent visual identity across hundreds of images, which is why studios and illustrators build whole style libraries in Midjourney.

Draft mode and HD

Draft mode makes a 24-image grid of quick, lower-resolution images on V8.1 and V8.2 for about half the GPU time of a standard job. It is the cheapest way to explore. When you find a winner, you vary or enhance it to full quality, or run it in HD for a native 2K render. HD jobs cost more GPU time, so the smart workflow is draft first, standard second and HD only for finals.

The V8.2 edit model

Before 2026, fixing one detail in Midjourney usually meant rerolling the whole image. The edit model changes that. You can open any image and type an instruction such as "make it night with neon reflections", paint over an area to inpaint it, expand the canvas to outpaint, or attach up to four reference images to bring in a specific product, outfit or character. Since September, inpainting only touches the selected pixels, so repeated edits no longer degrade the rest of the image.

There are rough edges. The edit model does not work with Remix or --tile, it tries to match the aspect ratio of the first attached image, and reference images act as guidance rather than strict instructions, so two characters can still blend together. Third-party guides recommend combining characters into one reference image when that happens.

Thinking Mode (in testing)

Thinking Mode is Midjourney's answer to tools that reason about prompts before drawing. On the alpha site you open a V8.2 job and click Rerun (Thinking). Midjourney checks the image against your prompt, finds mismatches such as missing objects, wrong layout, broken anatomy or misspelled text, and regenerates. Midjourney says it improved prompt accuracy, typography and coherence in its tests, but it is early, limited to the alpha site, and pricing has not been announced. Treat it as a promising preview, not a reason to buy today.

Video

Midjourney's video model animates images rather than generating video from scratch. Click Animate on any image to get a five-second clip, choose automatic or manual motion, then extend it to about 21 seconds or make it loop. You can set start and end frames. Video uses far more GPU time than stills, HD video needs Standard or above in Fast mode, and Relax-mode video is limited to Pro and Mega. It is great for animating your own art, but it has no native audio and no long scenes, so filmmakers should compare it with dedicated tools in our Runway vs Kling vs Luma comparison.

Organize and shared folders

Organize keeps your archive with search, filters and pinned folders, and since October folders can be shared with collaborators or view-only guests. Sharing does not change privacy, so non-Stealth images can still appear publicly.

Midjourney pricing in 2026: what each plan really gets

Midjourney sells GPU time, not image counts. Fast mode uses your monthly hours and returns results in seconds. Relax mode queues jobs and does not use hours, which is why it matters so much. Prices below are as of October 2026; confirm on Midjourney's plan comparison page before you subscribe.

PlanMonthlyBilled yearlyFast GPU timeRelax modeStealth (private)Who it suits
Basic$10$8/moAbout 3.3 hoursNoNoLearning and light hobby use
Standard$30$24/mo15 hoursUnlimited imagesNoMost regular users
Pro$60$48/mo30 hoursUnlimited images, SD videoYesFreelancers, client work, companies over $1M revenue
Mega$120$96/mo60 hoursUnlimited images, SD videoYesStudios and heavy video users

A few details matter more than the headline price. Basic has no Relax mode, so once its Fast time is gone you are buying extra hours (about $4 an hour) or waiting for renewal. Unused Fast hours do not roll over, even on yearly plans. HD images and video burn hours much faster than standard images. For anyone generating more than a few hundred images a month, Standard is the sweet spot because Relax mode makes images effectively unlimited.

Is there a Midjourney free trial? No. Midjourney has no free plan or trial in 2026, and refunds are only available when you have used very little GPU time. If you want to test the style first, browse Explore, or try free tools from our best free AI image generators list.

Commercial use, privacy and legal questions

Paid subscribers can use their Midjourney images commercially. The exception: a company with more than $1 million in gross annual revenue must be on Pro or Mega. Images are public in the gallery by default; only Pro and Mega include Stealth Mode, which keeps them out of Explore. That makes the true entry price for confidential client work $60 a month, not $10.

Two broader issues are worth knowing. First, in the US, purely AI-generated images generally cannot be registered for copyright, so do not assume you own a protectable asset. Second, Midjourney faces copyright lawsuits from Disney and Universal (filed June 2025) and Warner Bros. Discovery (filed September 2025). As of October 2026 the cases are pending, with no ruling on infringement or fair use. Avoid prompting for recognizable characters or brands in commercial work, and if training-data provenance matters to your legal team, see our Adobe Firefly review.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Best-in-class aesthetics: beautiful results from short prompts, with excellent lighting and composition.

  • Unmatched style control: personalization, moodboards and srefs keep a look consistent across projects.

  • Much faster in V8: draft mode and 4 to 5 times faster standard jobs make exploration cheap.

  • Real editing now: instruction edits, inpainting, outpainting and up to four references.

  • Unlimited Relax mode on Standard and above makes heavy use affordable.

  • Image-to-video built in, with loops and start and end frames.

Cons

  • No free plan or trial, and limited refunds.

  • No official API, so it cannot power an app or automation.

  • Public by default: privacy needs Pro or Mega.

  • Text and exact layouts still lag behind Ideogram and FLUX.

  • Opinionated style can override literal instructions.

  • Fast hours vanish quickly on Basic, especially with HD and video.

Common complaints from users

Across forums, app reviews and social posts in 2026, the same complaints come up repeatedly:

  • Running out of Fast time. Basic users regularly burn through about 3.3 hours in days once they try HD or video.

  • Moderation false positives. Harmless prompts sometimes get blocked because of a single word. Rephrasing usually works, but it is frustrating.

  • Feature churn. Parameters and buttons change often (omni-reference was replaced within months), so tutorials go stale fast.

  • Character consistency is still work. Better than before, but multi-character scenes can blend faces or outfits.

  • Support is slow for billing and account issues, according to many user reports. Midjourney did add clearer suspension notices and an Appeal button in October.

Midjourney vs the alternatives

Midjourney is not the right tool for every job. Here is how it stacks up against the main rivals, based on official docs and public feedback.

FAQ

Is Midjourney worth it in 2026?

Yes, if image quality and style are what you care about most. Midjourney V8.2 produces some of the most attractive images of any generator, and the Standard plan at $30/mo includes unlimited Relax images. It is not worth it if you need an API, readable long text, a free plan or cheap private generation, where Ideogram, FLUX or Leonardo AI fit better.

Is there a Midjourney free trial?

No. Midjourney has no free plan or free trial in 2026, and refunds are only offered if you have used very little GPU time. The cheapest way in is the Basic plan at $10 a month, or $8 a month billed yearly. You can browse the Explore feed for free to see what the model can do before paying.

What is the latest Midjourney version?

As of October 2026, the default model is V8.2, released on July 24, 2026. It followed V8.1, which became the default in June. An edit model for V8 launched in August, and Midjourney began testing Thinking Mode, which reruns V8.2 jobs after checking them against your prompt, on its alpha site on October 8.

Is Midjourney better than ChatGPT for images?

For artistic quality and style consistency, yes. Midjourney's lighting, texture and composition are hard to match, and srefs and personalization are unique. ChatGPT is better for conversational editing, infographics, diagrams and images with several lines of text, and it is included in a subscription many people already pay for. Many creators use both.

Can I use Midjourney images commercially?

Yes, on any paid plan, with one rule: companies earning more than $1 million in gross annual revenue must use Pro or Mega. Images are public unless you have Stealth Mode, also on Pro and Mega. Purely AI-generated images generally cannot be copyrighted in the US, so check Midjourney's current terms before relying on them for brand assets.

Does Midjourney have an API?

No. Midjourney does not offer an official public API, and automating the service breaks its terms of service. Unofficial third-party Midjourney APIs exist, but they put your account at risk. If you need programmatic image generation, use FLUX through Black Forest Labs, Ideogram's API or Leonardo AI's API instead.

Do I still need Discord for Midjourney?

No. You can sign up with Google and use everything on the midjourney.com web app, which now gets new features first. Discord is optional. Linking it lets you use the bot in Midjourney's server or your own, which some long-time users still prefer for quick jobs and community feedback.

Final verdict

Midjourney in 2026 is the best image generator for people who judge results with their eyes. V8.2 is faster and more obedient than any earlier version, the edit model finally lets you fix details instead of rerolling, and personalization plus srefs remain the best style controls on the market. The weaknesses are unchanged: no free plan, no API, public images below Pro, and text that still trails Ideogram. Start on Basic to learn, move to Standard if you generate often, and pay for Pro only when you need privacy or your company is over the revenue threshold.
