HeyGen Review (2026): Avatar V, Video Agent and Pricing
HeyGen is the most capable AI avatar video tool for marketers, creators and founders in 2026. Avatar V builds a lifelike digital you from a 15-second recording, video translation covers 175+ languages with lip sync, and Video Agent turns a prompt into a finished video. Here is what each plan really includes, where credits go, and who should pick Synthesia instead.
Verdict: in this HeyGen review, the short answer is that HeyGen is the best AI avatar video tool for marketing, sales, social and founder-led content in 2026. Avatar V creates a convincing digital version of you from a 15-second recording, video translation with voice cloning and lip sync covers 175+ languages, and Video Agent can turn a prompt or a URL into a finished, edited video. The Creator plan at $29 a month is enough for most individuals. Skip it if you run large-scale corporate training with strict governance, where Synthesia is the calmer, more enterprise-shaped choice, or if you mostly need cinematic footage rather than a presenter.
HeyGen shipped at a relentless pace in 2026: a new avatar model, directable motion, 30-minute videos in one pass, a two-host video podcast app, an open-source video framework for coding agents, and its own voice model. That speed is a strength and a source of confusion, because plans and credit rules changed several times. This review is based on HeyGen's official pricing page, its monthly release notes and help center, and public user feedback as of late October 2026. We did not run our own benchmark tests.
HeyGen at a glance
What it is: an AI video platform for talking avatar videos, video translation, AI-generated scenes and interactive avatars, with a web app, mobile apps and an API.
Best for: marketers, creators, founders, sales teams and anyone localizing video into other languages.
Skip it if: you need a locked-down enterprise L&D platform, or you want cinematic B-roll more than a presenter.
Pricing: free plan (3 videos a month, 1 minute each, watermarked); Creator $29 a month; Pro $49; Business $149 plus $20 per extra seat; Enterprise custom.
Standout 2026 features: Avatar V, Custom Motion, Video Agent with Seedance, 30-minute videos, Video Podcast, HyperFrames, HeyGen Voice.
Biggest complaints: credits that run out quickly on premium features, billing and cancellation issues, and occasional lip sync drift.
What changed at HeyGen in 2026
HeyGen publishes a monthly release post, and the 2026 ones add up to a different product than a year ago:
February: Video Agent API for prompt-to-video and video creation from inside ChatGPT.
March: Brand Systems, interactive video, new Video Agent styles and 4K enhancement.
April: Avatar V, plus Seedance 2.0 as an engine inside Video Agent and Avatar Shots, Instant Highlights v2 for clipping long videos, a CLI, HeyGen Skills for Claude Code and Cursor, and HyperFrames, an open-source framework for writing video as HTML.
May: Custom Motion for Avatar V, an Avatar V API at five cents per second, LiveAvatar integrations, a full Android app, and integrations with Canva, Superhuman, Codex and Lovable.
June: Avatar Look Packs and Speech Cleanup.
July: Video Podcast, 30-minute talking videos in a single pass, website-to-video, Figma-to-video and a built-in media library.
September and October: Digital Twins renamed Video Avatars, voice cloning limits adjusted on paid plans, and HeyGen Voice, the company's first in-house voice model, added to Creator and up.
Key features in depth
Avatar V: your digital twin from 15 seconds
Avatar V is HeyGen's fifth-generation avatar model and the main reason to choose HeyGen in 2026. One 15-second recording produces an avatar that shows you from the waist up, keeps your identity across camera angles and long videos, and can be dressed in different outfits and settings without re-recording. Since May, Custom Motion lets you direct face, hands, posture, gaze and energy in plain English, for example "look at the camera, lean in, stay serious." Quality still depends on your source clip: good light, a steady camera and natural delivery matter more than any setting.
Older engines remain available. Avatar III is the cheapest and fine for simple talking heads, Avatar IV animates a photo or video with expressive gestures, and Avatar V is the most realistic. The free plan includes Avatar IV access and one custom video avatar; Creator includes limited Avatar V usage; Pro and up get full Avatar V and first access to new models.
Video translation and dubbing
HeyGen's breakout feature is still one of its best. Upload a video of a real person speaking, and HeyGen translates the speech, clones the speaker's voice and re-syncs the lips in the target language. Paid plans cover 175 languages and dialects (30+ on the free plan), and Pro adds script proofreading so a reviewer can fix the translation before it renders. Lip sync looks best on front-facing talking heads; side profiles, beards, hands near the mouth and fast speech still cause artifacts. Always have a native speaker check the result.
Video Agent: prompt to finished video
Video Agent writes the script, picks or generates scenes, adds your avatar, voiceover, captions, music and motion graphics, and renders a complete video from a prompt, a document or a link. Since April it can mix Avatar V presenter scenes with Seedance cinematic shots, and since July it builds custom motion graphics with HyperFrames and can turn a website or a Figma file into a launch video. A Storyboard mode proposes five creative angles and sketches key frames for approval before spending credits. It is the fastest route from idea to a publishable explainer, though you will usually tweak the script and pacing.
Video Podcast, 30-minute videos and long form
Since July, HeyGen can render a single 30-minute talking video in one pass on Avatar III, IV and V, which matters for courses and webinars. The Video Podcast app turns a script, URL, PDF or topic into a two-host show with studio scenes and multi-cam cuts, and you can invite a co-host who joins with their own avatar. Plan limits still apply: 1 minute per video on Free, 30 minutes on Creator and Pro, 60 minutes on Business.
Interactive avatars and the API
LiveAvatar lets your digital twin hold real-time conversations inside your own app or website, for support, sales or training. The developer API covers avatar video, translation and Video Agent, with Avatar V priced at five cents per second via the API (May 2026 pricing; check the current API pricing page). Business adds integrations with n8n, Make, HubSpot and Zapier, which makes personalized sales videos at volume realistic for a small team.
Voice, editing and brand tools
HeyGen Voice, the in-house text-to-speech model launched in October, is included with Creator (up to 10 hours) and Pro (16+ hours). Every plan includes at least one voice clone. The editor is scene-based, with templates, captions and stock media, and Business adds a Brand Kit, SCORM export for learning systems and SAML SSO. It is not a full video editor, so heavy cutting still happens elsewhere; see our best AI video editors guide.
HeyGen pricing (as of October 2026)
HeyGen moved to a single credit currency in 2026. Plan prices and inclusions below are from the official pricing page; yearly billing gives two months free (Creator is $24 a month billed yearly).

How HeyGen credits work
One currency: credits pay for avatar video, translation, Video Agent and generated assets. Usage depends on the model, the duration and the complexity of the job, and the app shows an estimate before you render.
Premium engines cost more: third-party guides report Avatar IV, Avatar V and Video Agent at about 20 credits per minute and lip-synced translation at about 5 per minute. At that rate, Creator's 600 credits cover roughly 30 minutes of premium avatar video. HeyGen does not publish a per-minute table on its pricing page, so verify in the app.
Rollover: monthly subscribers' unused credits roll over for one more month; yearly subscribers' credits accumulate until renewal. Credits do not survive cancellation.
Pro scales: Pro offers higher credit tiers, all the way to 100,000 credits for $4,300 a month.
Pros and cons
Pros
Among the most realistic custom avatars available, from just 15 seconds of footage.
Best-in-class video translation with voice cloning and lip sync in 175 languages.
Video Agent turns prompts, documents and URLs into complete videos.
Generous free plan for testing, and an affordable Creator tier.
Strong API, CLI and integrations, including interactive LiveAvatar.
Fast product cadence, with meaningful releases almost every month.
Cons
Credits disappear quickly on Avatar V, Video Agent and 4K.
Plan rules change often, which makes older reviews and tutorials unreliable.
Lip sync can drift on hard scripts, profiles or fast speech.
Enterprise controls (SSO, SCORM, brand kits) start at Business, $149 a month.
Billing complaints about renewals and cancellations appear regularly.
Common complaints from public user feedback
HeyGen's reviews are better than most AI video tools: its Trustpilot page (heygen.com) showed a TrustScore of about 4.2 out of 5 from nearly 5,000 reviews when we checked in October 2026, with praise for ease of use and realistic avatars. The recurring complaints are:
Cost creep: long-time users say the service has become expensive as premium features move to credits.
Credit tracking and expiry: confusion over which features use credits and when they expire.
Robotic voices in some languages, and a wish for more voice control.
Glitches: background inconsistencies and occasional lip sync errors, so review every render.
Cancellation: a minority report being charged after trying to cancel. Cancel well before renewal and keep the confirmation email.
HeyGen vs the alternatives
HeyGen vs Synthesia
Synthesia is the enterprise standard for training, onboarding and internal communications, with SOC 2 and ISO 42001 compliance, structured templates, quizzes and branching. HeyGen is more creative and better at translating real footage and making personal avatars quickly. Read our HeyGen vs Synthesia comparison and our Synthesia review.
HeyGen vs AI Studios and Colossyan
AI Studios (formerly DeepBrain AI) offers realistic avatars, dubbing and interactive AI Human kiosks for retail and banking. Colossyan is built for workplace learning, with doc-to-video, quizzes, branching and SCORM export.
HeyGen vs Argil, Hedra and Tavus
Argil focuses on creator-style clone videos for social media. Hedra animates any character, including cartoons, from an image and audio. Tavus is developer-first, built for real-time conversational video replicas inside products.

FAQ
Is HeyGen free?
Yes. HeyGen's free plan includes 3 videos a month, up to 1 minute each, with a watermark, access to Avatar IV, one custom video avatar, 500+ stock avatars and translation into 30+ languages. It is enough to test quality. Paid plans start at $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly.
Is HeyGen worth the money?
For marketers, creators and anyone translating video, usually yes. Avatar V and lip-synced translation in 175 languages replace hours of filming and dubbing. It is worth less if you only make a few videos a year, or if you need enterprise training features, where Synthesia or Colossyan may fit better.
How many minutes do you get with HeyGen Creator?
Creator includes 600 credits a month, with videos up to 30 minutes long. Minutes depend on the engine: third-party guides put premium avatars such as Avatar IV and V at about 20 credits per minute, or roughly 30 minutes a month. Cheaper engines stretch further. The app shows the cost before you render.
What is HeyGen Avatar V?
Avatar V is HeyGen's newest avatar model, released in April 2026. It builds a realistic, waist-up digital twin from a single 15-second recording, keeps your likeness across angles, outfits and long videos, and supports Custom Motion so you can direct gestures and expression with plain-language instructions.
Is HeyGen better than Synthesia?
HeyGen is better for personal avatars, video translation, marketing content and API-driven personalization. Synthesia is better for enterprise training, governance and compliance-heavy organizations. Many companies use both: Synthesia in learning and development, HeyGen in marketing and sales.
Is it legal to use HeyGen to clone someone?
Only with that person's consent. HeyGen requires consent verification for custom avatars and voice clones, and cloning someone without permission can violate its terms and laws on likeness and impersonation. Disclose AI presenters where your audience or local rules expect it.
Do HeyGen credits roll over?
Yes, partly. On monthly plans, unused credits roll over for one more month. On yearly plans, credits accumulate until your renewal date. All credits are lost if you cancel, so use them before your subscription ends.
Final verdict
HeyGen is the most complete AI avatar platform for anyone who makes video to market, sell, teach or localize. Avatar V sets the realism bar, translation with lip sync is still the best in the category, and Video Agent makes a finished video from almost any input. The trade-offs are a credit system that drains fast on premium features and plans that change often. Start free, move to Creator when you hit the watermark, and upgrade to Pro only if you need 4K, full Avatar V and the newest models.
