ChatGPT Review (2026): Is GPT-6 Worth Paying For?
Our ChatGPT review for October 2026: what GPT-6 Luna, Sol and Astra change, what ChatGPT Work, Codex and Intelligent UI actually do, what each plan from Free to the $500 Pro tier gets, the real complaints, and when Claude, Gemini or Perplexity is the better pick.
Verdict: this ChatGPT review lands where most of 2026 has: ChatGPT is still the best all-round AI assistant for most people, and the October rollout of GPT-6 made it better. The $20 Plus plan is the sweet spot, bundling GPT-6 Sol in chat, the ChatGPT Work agent, Codex, Deep Research, Images 2.0 and an ad-free experience. Skip it (or stay on Free) if you mainly write long-form prose and prefer Claude, if your life runs on Gmail and Android and Google Gemini fits better, or if you need video generation, which ChatGPT no longer offers.
2026 has been the busiest year in ChatGPT's history. Ads arrived on the Free and Go tiers in the US, the Sora app and the Atlas browser were shut down, ChatGPT Work launched as a long-running agent, and GPT-6 replaced the GPT-5.x family in three sizes. This review is based on OpenAI's announcements and help pages, official pricing as reported through October 2026, product documentation, and public user feedback. We did not run our own benchmark tests. Plans and model pickers have changed several times this fall, so confirm the details on ChatGPT's pricing page before you pay.

What is ChatGPT, and what changed in 2026?
ChatGPT is OpenAI's AI assistant, the product that kicked off the current AI wave in late 2022 and still the most widely used chatbot in the world. You can type, talk, upload files and photos, or hand it a multi-step job, and it answers with text, tables, code, images or interactive widgets. It runs on the web, on Windows and Mac desktop apps, and on iOS and Android.
Here is what changed this year, in order:
January: ChatGPT Go, the budget tier first tested in India in 2025, launched worldwide.
February 9: ads started appearing for US users on Free and Go. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise stay ad-free.
April: OpenAI discontinued the standalone Sora video app and shipped ChatGPT Images 2.0 for still images.
July 9: ChatGPT Work launched as an agent mode that can work on a task for hours and produce finished files.
August 9: the Atlas browser was retired. Its agent features moved into the ChatGPT desktop app, a Chrome extension and a cloud browser.
September: GPT-6 Astra arrived first, followed by GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna in Work, Codex and the API.
September 29 (DevDay): a $500 Pro tier, GPT-6.1 Sol for Work and Codex, and "dots," OpenAI's always-on agents.
October 7 and 8: GPT-6 became the default in the Chat tab with a new Intelligent UI, first for paid plans, then for Free and Go.
GPT-6 in ChatGPT: Luna, Sol and Astra explained
OpenAI now ships a family of models rather than one. According to OpenAI's October 7 announcement, as reported by 9to5Mac, the Chat tab runs on GPT-6 Sol for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, and on GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go. Both are tuned for everyday conversation. GPT-6 Astra is the flagship reasoning model: Plus users reach it for harder reasoning and inside Work and Codex, while the Pro tiers get Astra Pro reasoning and the most allowance. GPT-6.1 Sol is the newest workhorse, available in Work and Codex but not yet in ordinary chat.
GPT-6 can also start answering while it is still reasoning, so the reasoning models feel far less sluggish than GPT-5 did.
What this means for you: the free plan gives you a capable but lighter model. If you want the frontier model for hard problems, you need at least Plus, and for heavy daily use of Astra, a Pro tier.
Key features, tested against the docs
Intelligent UI: answers that are more than text
The headline of the GPT-6 rollout is Intelligent UI. ChatGPT now decides how to present an answer: a comparison may appear as side-by-side cards, an explanation as an interactive diagram, and a calculation as a small tool with inputs you can change. It can also build mini apps inside a conversation, such as a bill splitter, a loan calculator or a simple game. For learning and quick analysis, it is a real step up.
ChatGPT Work: the long-running agent
ChatGPT Work is the agent mode that launched in July and runs on the same agent technology as Codex. You describe an outcome, such as "research these five competitors and build a pricing comparison spreadsheet and a short deck," and it plans, browses, reads files, runs code and returns finished documents, spreadsheets or presentations. Tasks can run for a long time and continue while you do something else. Free users get limited access on desktop, Plus gets an expanded allowance, and Pro and Business Premium get the longest sessions. Like every agent, it still needs review: check its sources and numbers before you forward its output.
Codex for coding
OpenAI Codex is bundled with paid ChatGPT plans and is the strongest reason developers pick ChatGPT. It runs coding tasks in cloud sandboxes or on your machine, works in parallel, and returns pull requests you can review. Plus users get GPT-6 Astra inside Codex. If coding is your main job, read our OpenAI Codex vs Claude Code comparison and the wider best AI coding tools roundup.
Deep Research and web search
ChatGPT searches the web on every plan and cites its sources. Deep Research goes further: it reads dozens of pages over several minutes and returns a structured, cited report. Paid plans get a bigger monthly allowance, and Pro gets the maximum. For fast factual lookups with a source on every sentence, Perplexity is still quicker; our Perplexity vs ChatGPT comparison breaks down when each wins.
ChatGPT Images 2.0
Image generation runs on ChatGPT Images 2.0, released in April and available on every plan with limits. It is especially good at text inside images, layouts such as posters and infographics, consistent characters across a set, and targeted edits to an uploaded photo. Pro tiers advertise unlimited, faster image creation. For pure art direction, dedicated tools still have an edge; see our ChatGPT vs Midjourney comparison.
Voice, vision and the mobile apps
Voice mode holds natural spoken conversations you can interrupt, which makes it popular for tutoring and language practice. On mobile you can share your camera or screen and ask about what it sees. It remains one of the most polished voice assistants available.
Memory, projects and custom GPTs
ChatGPT remembers facts and preferences across chats, and you can view, edit or turn off what it remembers. Projects group chats, files and instructions, and scheduled tasks run prompts on a timer. Custom GPTs still exist, but OpenAI's focus has moved to agents and apps.
Apps, connectors and the desktop app
Connectors let ChatGPT search and act on Google Drive, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Slack, GitHub and more, and third-party apps can run inside the chat. After retiring Atlas, OpenAI moved browser-based agent features into the desktop app, a ChatGPT Chrome extension and a remote cloud browser, according to its Atlas help article.
Dots: always-on agents
Announced at DevDay, dots are persistent background agents powered by GPT-6 Astra, available on Pro plans (reportedly excluding the EEA, Switzerland and the UK) and Business Premium seats, with Enterprise and Edu in beta. Treat them as early: useful for monitoring and recurring work, not for unsupervised important actions.
ChatGPT pricing (as of October 2026)
OpenAI's pricing page blocks automated readers, so the table below combines OpenAI's announcements with independent snapshots of the pricing page from October, such as IntuitionLabs' plan comparison. US prices; Go is priced locally in many countries.
| Plan | Price | Chat model | What you really get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | GPT-6 Luna | Unlimited everyday chat within guardrails, limited uploads, images, voice, Deep Research and Work (desktop). Ads in the US. |
| Go | $8/mo | GPT-6 Luna | More messages, uploads, images and memory than Free. May show ads in the US. |
| Plus | $20/mo | GPT-6 Sol | Ad-free, GPT-6 Astra for reasoning, expanded Work, Codex, Deep Research, projects and scheduled tasks. |
| Pro 100 / 200 / 500 | $100, $200 or $500/mo | GPT-6 Sol plus Astra Pro reasoning | Roughly 5x to 25x Plus usage, longest Work and Codex sessions, dots, unlimited images. Pro 500 adds Astra Ultrafast. |
| Business | $20/seat/mo annual or $25 monthly; Premium seat $100 or $125 | GPT-6 Sol | Shared workspace, GPT creation, company connectors, SSO, no training on your data by default. |
| Enterprise | Custom | GPT-6 Sol (admin controlled) | SCIM, data residency, custom retention, compliance tools, SLA support. |
Pro plans are billed monthly with no annual discount, and the $200 tier reopened at DevDay with a smaller allowance than before, so check the live page before choosing a Pro tier.
Is ChatGPT Plus worth it?
For anyone who uses ChatGPT more than a few times a week, yes. The jump from Free to Plus gets you a stronger chat model, access to Astra for hard problems, Codex, a real Work allowance, more Deep Research, and no ads. Go makes sense only if you want higher limits on the lighter model and do not mind ads. Pro is for people who hit Plus limits every week, usually heavy Codex or Work users; nobody else needs it.
Pros and cons
Pros
Widest feature set of any assistant: chat, agents, coding, research, images, voice and apps in one subscription.
GPT-6 is a real upgrade: faster reasoning that streams as it thinks, plus Intelligent UI answers.
Codex included with Plus: a mature coding agent at no extra cost.
Excellent image generation: Images 2.0 handles text, layouts and edits well.
Polished apps: the best-in-class voice mode and strong desktop and mobile apps.
Works with Microsoft 365 and Google: connectors cover both ecosystems.
Cons
Opaque limits: OpenAI rarely publishes exact message or agent caps, and they shift.
Ads on Free and Go in the US.
No video generation since Sora was discontinued.
Plan churn: tiers, allowances and model names changed repeatedly this fall.
Training on by default for personal plans unless you opt out in Data Controls.
Default writing style still reads as AI without steering.
Limitations and common complaints
Public feedback on review sites, app stores and Reddit in 2026 clusters around a few themes. We summarize them here rather than quote individual users.
Usage caps that are hard to plan around. Even paying users report hitting rolling limits without warning, especially on agent and reasoning features. OpenAI says limits apply and change, but rarely gives numbers.
Instruction drift. A recurring complaint is that answers wander from the request, make unwanted assumptions or flatten the writing style. Clear instructions, examples and project-level instructions help.
Hallucinations still happen. GPT-6 is more accurate, but it can still state wrong facts confidently. Ask for sources and open them for anything important.
Ads and privacy trade-offs. Ads on the cheap tiers bother some users, and personal-plan chats can be used for training unless you turn that off.
Practical fixes: turn off model training in Settings, Data Controls; use Temporary Chat for sensitive one-offs; and put recurring instructions in a project.
ChatGPT vs the alternatives

FAQ
Is ChatGPT Plus worth it in 2026?
For regular users, yes. At $20 a month, Plus upgrades you from GPT-6 Luna to GPT-6 Sol, adds GPT-6 Astra for hard reasoning, includes Codex and a real ChatGPT Work allowance, expands Deep Research and removes ads. If you only ask a few quick questions a week, the free plan is enough.
What model does ChatGPT use now?
Since October 7, 2026, ChatGPT's Chat tab runs on GPT-6 Sol for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, and GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go (from October 8). GPT-6 Astra is the flagship reasoning model, used for advanced reasoning, ChatGPT Work, Codex and the Pro tiers.
Is ChatGPT free to use?
Yes. The free plan offers unlimited everyday chat with GPT-6 Luna within abuse guardrails, plus limited uploads, image generation, voice, Deep Research and desktop Work access. In the US it shows ads. Paid plans start with Go at $8 a month.
What is the difference between ChatGPT Go and Plus?
Go costs $8 a month and gives higher limits than Free on the lighter GPT-6 Luna model, but it may show ads in the US. Plus costs $20, is ad-free, uses GPT-6 Sol in chat, adds GPT-6 Astra reasoning, and includes Codex, expanded ChatGPT Work and more Deep Research.
Can ChatGPT make videos?
Not anymore. OpenAI discontinued the Sora app in April 2026, and no ChatGPT plan includes video generation. ChatGPT still creates and edits still images with Images 2.0. For video, use Gemini's paid plans or dedicated tools such as Runway or Kling AI.
Is ChatGPT safe for confidential work?
Use a Business or Enterprise workspace for confidential data, since those exclude your content from training by default and add admin controls. On personal plans, turn off model training in Data Controls and use Temporary Chat, and avoid pasting secrets, health records or client data you are not allowed to share.
Is ChatGPT better than Claude or Gemini?
It is the best all-rounder, not the best at everything. Claude usually writes more naturally and handles long documents more carefully. Gemini is better inside Google apps and Android and offers video. ChatGPT wins on breadth: agents, Codex, images, voice and apps in one plan.
Final verdict
ChatGPT in late 2026 is faster, more visual and more agentic than it has ever been. GPT-6 Sol makes everyday chat noticeably better on Plus, Intelligent UI turns answers into tools, and ChatGPT Work plus Codex make the $20 plan the best value in consumer AI for people who do a mix of everything. The downsides are real: opaque limits, ads on the cheapest tiers, no video, and a pricing structure that keeps moving. Start on Free, upgrade to Plus once you use it daily, and only consider Pro if you consistently hit Plus limits. If one specific job matters most, such as polished writing or Google-native work, test Claude or Gemini side by side before you commit.
