Grok vs ChatGPT (2026): Which AI Assistant Is Worth Paying For?
ChatGPT is the better all-round assistant for writing, files, images and agents. Grok is the better pick for real-time X data, looser answers, AI video and a bundle that now includes Cursor and X Premium. Here is how Grok 4.7 and GPT-6 compare on price, features, accuracy and privacy.
Short verdict: in the Grok vs ChatGPT matchup, pick ChatGPT if you want the most complete everyday assistant: better writing, deeper file analysis, mature memory and projects, Codex for coding, and a $20 Plus plan with no ads. Pick Grok if you want live answers grounded in X posts and the web, fewer refusals, built-in image and video generation, or a single bill that now bundles Grok, Cursor and X Premium. For most people, ChatGPT is the safer default. For news junkies, X power users and developers already living in Cursor, Grok is a serious alternative.
Both lineups changed this fall. xAI (now part of SpaceX) released Grok 4.7 on September 21, 2026, and on October 12 replaced SuperGrok with a new bundle called The X Subscription. OpenAI shipped GPT-6 Astra on September 3, followed by GPT-6.1 Sol and, on October 26, the cheaper GPT-6.1 Terra. This comparison is based on official pricing pages, product documentation and public user feedback, not our own hands-on benchmark. Plans move fast, so confirm figures on the pages we link.
Quick verdict by use case

Fewer refusals and blunter answers: Grok, with the trade-offs in accuracy and safety discussed below.
What Grok and ChatGPT are in 2026
Grok in one paragraph
Grok is the assistant from xAI, which SpaceX acquired in February 2026 and has since rebranded more than once. It runs on grok.com, in the iOS and Android apps, inside X, in Tesla vehicles and through the xAI API. The app offers a Fast mode (the only mode on the free plan), an Expert reasoning mode, a multi-agent Heavy mode on top tiers, and an Auto setting that chooses for you. Its defining feature is live search across X and the web, with citations. It also makes images and video with Grok Imagine, offers voice conversations, and has add-ins for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
ChatGPT in one paragraph
ChatGPT is OpenAI's general-purpose assistant and still the most widely used AI product. It is now organized into three surfaces: Chat for conversation, Work for longer agent jobs that produce documents, spreadsheets and slides, and Codex for software development. It searches the web, analyzes files, generates images with ChatGPT Images 2.0, holds voice conversations, remembers context across chats and connects to Google Drive, Microsoft 365, Slack, GitHub and more. Our upcoming ChatGPT review goes deeper on the whole product.
Current models: Grok 4.7 vs GPT-6
xAI's lineup
xAI's models page describes Grok 4.7 as its most capable model and recommends it for code and chat. It has a 500K-token context window in the API, a May 2026 knowledge cutoff, and four reasoning effort levels (low, medium, high and xhigh). Older Grok 4.6, 4.5, 4.3 and 4.20 models remain available in the API.
OpenAI's lineup
OpenAI's models page lists four current flagships, all with 1.05M-token context windows in the API: GPT-6 Astra for the hardest reasoning and coding, GPT-6.1 Sol as the balanced workhorse, the new GPT-6.1 Terra as a faster, cheaper mid-size model aimed at computer use, and GPT-6 Luna for high-volume tasks. In ChatGPT, free users get lighter models, Plus users get Sol in chat with Astra and Terra inside Work and Codex, and the Pro tiers get Astra in ordinary chat.
The practical takeaway: on raw capability the two flagships are close, and third-party benchmark sites disagree on who leads. Grok 4.7 is much cheaper per token in the API. ChatGPT gives you a wider choice of models and a far bigger product around them.
Pricing: The X Subscription vs ChatGPT plans (as of October 2026)
Grok prices come from xAI's X Subscription pricing docs. ChatGPT prices come from ChatGPT pricing and OpenAI's help center. US list prices before tax.
| Tier | Grok (The X Subscription) | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0. Limited usage, Fast mode only | $0. Lighter GPT-6 models, web search, limited uploads and images, ads in the US |
| Entry | Plus: $8/mo or $80/yr. Base usage, X Premium benefits, Cursor access; no Grok Bot | Go: $8/mo. Higher limits than Free, still ad-supported in the US |
| Main tier | Premium: $30/mo or $300/yr. 4x Plus usage, Grok Bot included | Plus: $20/mo. Ad-free, GPT-6 Sol in chat, Astra and Terra in Work and Codex, Deep Research |
| Power | Super: $100/mo (15x). Ultra: $200/mo (50x) | Pro: $100, $200 or $500/mo, roughly 5x to 25x Plus usage, Astra in chat |
| Teams | Premium, Super or Ultra seats at $30, $100 or $200 per seat | Business from $20/user/mo billed annually |
Three details matter more than the headline prices. First, Grok usage is a shared weekly pool that covers Grok and Grok models inside Cursor, so heavy coding eats into your chat allowance. Third-party models in Cursor, such as Claude or GPT, are billed separately from your first use. Second, existing SuperGrok and X Premium subscribers can keep their old plans (SuperGrok was $30 and SuperGrok Heavy $300), and xAI's docs say switching to the new bundle cannot be undone. Third, ChatGPT's two cheapest tiers show ads in the US, while Plus and above do not.
Value verdict: at the main tier, ChatGPT Plus is $10 a month cheaper than Grok Premium and includes more features. Grok Premium makes sense if you would pay for X Premium and Cursor anyway, because then the bundle replaces two or three bills.
Grok vs ChatGPT, feature by feature
Real-time information and X data
This is Grok's home turf. It searches X posts and the web on demand and can summarize what people are saying about an event minutes after it happens. ChatGPT also searches the web and cites sources, but it does not have privileged access to X, and its answers from training data carry no citations.
There is a catch. Because Grok leans on live X content, false viral posts can surface in its answers, and the @grok reply bot has produced high-profile errors in the past. For anything that matters, click through to the sources. If cited web answers are your main need, a dedicated answer engine may beat both; see our Perplexity vs ChatGPT comparison.
Winner: Grok, for anything happening right now.
Writing quality
Public user feedback is fairly consistent: ChatGPT is the better writer for emails, reports, marketing copy and anything with a strict format. It keeps a steady tone across long outputs and is easier to steer with examples. Grok writes in a punchier, more conversational voice and is happy to be blunt or funny, which some people love for social posts and brainstorming.
If writing is your top priority, also look at Claude; our Claude vs ChatGPT comparison covers that matchup.
Winner: ChatGPT.
Reasoning and research
Both offer step-by-step reasoning modes. Grok's Expert and Heavy modes spend more compute on hard problems, and Heavy runs several agents in parallel before agreeing on an answer. ChatGPT offers Deep Research for long cited reports, and the Work agent goes further by turning research into finished documents, spreadsheets or slide decks.
Winner: ChatGPT for research deliverables; Grok for fast, current takes.
Coding
This category got more interesting after SpaceX bought Cursor in August 2026. Every paid X Subscription tier now includes Cursor usage from the shared pool, Grok 4.7 is available inside Cursor, and Grok Build is a terminal coding agent with a plan mode, subagents and headless runs.
ChatGPT Plus includes OpenAI Codex, which runs tasks in cloud sandboxes and on your machine, returns pull requests, and now uses GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Terra. Our best AI coding tools roundup and Claude Code vs Cursor comparison cover the wider field.
Winner: tie. ChatGPT if you want an agent bundled with a general assistant; Grok if you already live in Cursor.
Image and video generation
ChatGPT uses ChatGPT Images 2.0, released in April 2026 on every plan. It renders text accurately, plans layouts before drawing and can produce several consistent images from one prompt, which makes it strong for posters, diagrams and product mockups. OpenAI discontinued its Sora app in April 2026, so ChatGPT plans no longer include video.
Grok Imagine generates both images and short video clips with audio, and xAI has steadily raised its quality and resolution through 2026. It is fast and less restrictive than ChatGPT, which is also its biggest risk: since January 2026, SpaceX has faced lawsuits over Grok's image editing, including sexualized images of real people. Use it for your own creative work, never for images of real people without consent. For dedicated tools, see our best AI video generators guide.
Winner: ChatGPT for images; Grok for video.
Voice, memory and personalization
Both apps have real-time voice. ChatGPT's voice mode is the more popular tutor and thinking partner, and its memory, projects and custom GPTs are mature: it remembers your preferences across chats and lets you package instructions into reusable assistants. Grok has voice conversations, custom instructions and personality options, and xAI released a new Grok Voice 3.0 model in October, but its memory and project tools are less developed than ChatGPT's. Check Grok's current settings before relying on long-term memory.
Winner: ChatGPT.
Integrations and ecosystem
ChatGPT has the bigger ecosystem by a wide margin: thousands of custom GPTs, third-party apps inside chat, connectors to Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack and GitHub, and a desktop app that combines Chat, Work and Codex. Grok's ecosystem is narrower but distinctive: it is built into X, Tesla cars and Cursor, and it has Office add-ins.
Winner: ChatGPT.
Safety, accuracy and tone
Grok is designed to answer more questions and refuse fewer, with a sharper sense of humor. The trade-off is a history of public incidents, including antisemitic replies from the @grok account in July 2025 that xAI apologized for, and the image lawsuits above. ChatGPT is more cautious, sometimes to the point of frustrating users, but it is the more predictable choice for workplaces, schools and customer-facing work.
Winner: ChatGPT for professional use; Grok if you want fewer guardrails and accept the risk.
Privacy and data controls
On consumer plans, both companies may use your conversations to improve their models unless you opt out in settings. ChatGPT offers Data Controls and Temporary Chats that are not saved to history. Grok also has privacy settings and a private chat option, but remember that connecting your X account links your AI usage to your social profile. Business plans from both vendors exclude your data from training by default. For confidential work, use a business plan, not a personal account.
Winner: tie. Read the current settings on your plan.
API pricing for developers
If you are building on the models rather than chatting, the gap is large. Figures are per million tokens from xAI's models page and OpenAI's published pricing, as of October 2026; check both pages before you commit.
| Model | Input | Output | Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grok 4.7 | $2.00 ($4.00 above 200K) | $6.00 ($12.00 above 200K) | 500K |
| Grok 4.3 | $1.25 | $2.50 | 1M |
| GPT-6 Astra | $10.00 (reported) | $50.00 (reported) | 1.05M |
| GPT-6.1 Terra | $1.00 (reported) | $5.00 (reported) | 1.05M |
Grok 4.7 is several times cheaper than GPT-6 Astra at the frontier. OpenAI's Terra narrows the gap for mid-size workloads.

FAQ
Is Grok better than ChatGPT?
Not overall. Grok is better for real-time X and news questions, less filtered answers and video generation. ChatGPT is better for writing, file analysis, memory, research deliverables and its much larger ecosystem. On raw model quality, Grok 4.7 and GPT-6 are close, so pick based on what you do every day rather than benchmark charts.
Is Grok free to use?
Yes. Grok has a free plan with limited usage of Fast mode on grok.com, the apps and X. Expert reasoning, higher limits and the bundled X Premium and Cursor benefits need a paid X Subscription tier, starting with Plus at $8 a month. Grok Bot starts at the $30 Premium tier.
How much is SuperGrok now?
xAI replaced SuperGrok for new customers on October 12, 2026 with The X Subscription: Plus at $8, Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200 a month. Premium keeps the old $30 SuperGrok price. Existing SuperGrok subscribers can stay on their plan, but switching to the new bundle is permanent.
Is Grok or ChatGPT better for coding?
It depends on your tools. ChatGPT Plus includes Codex, a mature coding agent that uses GPT-6 Astra. Grok plans include Cursor usage and the Grok Build terminal agent, and Grok 4.7 is much cheaper through the API. If you already use Cursor, Grok is attractive. Otherwise Codex is the safer pick.
Is Grok more accurate than ChatGPT?
Not reliably. Grok is better at fresh information because it searches X and the web live, but live X content can include false viral posts. ChatGPT is more consistent on settled facts and structured tasks. Neither is accurate enough to trust blindly, so check sources for statistics, quotes, and medical, legal or financial claims.
Can ChatGPT make videos like Grok?
No. OpenAI discontinued its Sora app in April 2026, and no ChatGPT plan currently includes video generation. Grok Imagine makes short video clips with audio on paid plans. For more control over video, dedicated tools like Runway or Kling are stronger than either assistant.
Final verdict
ChatGPT is the better choice for most people: it writes better, handles files and research more completely, remembers more, and its $20 Plus plan is cheaper than Grok's main tier while including more. Grok wins when the job is about what is happening right now, when you want fewer guardrails or video generation, or when the new bundle replaces bills you already pay for X Premium and Cursor. Try both free tiers on a week of real tasks, then pay for the one that saves you more time.
