Gemini Review (2026): Is Gemini 4 Argon Worth It?

Our Google Gemini review for October 2026: what Gemini 4 Argon changes, how Tasks, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Nano Banana and Veo work, what Free, AI Plus, AI Pro and AI Ultra really include, the privacy and Android complaints, and when ChatGPT or Claude is the better pick.

Verdict: this Gemini review finds that Google Gemini is the best AI assistant for people who live in Google's world, and with Gemini 4 Argon it is now a top-tier model too. Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month is the best bundle in consumer AI: Gemini 4 Argon, a 1M-token context window, Deep Research, video generation, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and 5 TB of storage. Skip it if you use Microsoft 365 or a mix of non-Google tools, if you care most about polished long-form writing (try Claude), or if you are uneasy about human reviewers reading some conversations on consumer accounts.

Gemini changed a lot in 2026. Google skipped a planned 3.5 Pro release and shipped Gemini 4 Argon instead, added a Chat and Tasks toggle, connected Gemini to more than 40 outside apps, renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook, folded video generation into every paid tier, and finished replacing Google Assistant on Android phones. This review is based on Google's official plans page, product announcements and help center, plus public user feedback. We did not run our own benchmarks. Google changes limits and regional availability often, so confirm on the Google AI plans page before you subscribe.

Gemini review at a glance

  • Best for: Gmail, Docs, Drive and Android users, people who work with very long files, and anyone who wants image and video generation in one subscription.

  • Current models: Gemini 4 Argon (AI Pro and Ultra), the Pro and Flash models, and Flash-Lite on the free plan.

  • Price: Free, AI Plus at $4.99/mo, AI Pro at $19.99/mo, AI Ultra at $99.99 or $199.99/mo.

  • Standout features: Gemini in Google apps, Deep Research (even free), Tasks, Gemini Live, Nano Banana images, Veo and Gemini Omni video, Gemini Notebook.

  • Biggest weaknesses: best features require a Google-centric workflow, human review of some chats, and a rocky Assistant-to-Gemini switch on Android.

  • Skip it if: your work lives in Microsoft 365, Slack and non-Google apps, or you want the most natural writing voice.

What is Gemini, and what changed in 2026?

Gemini is Google's AI assistant and the model family behind it. It runs as a standalone app on the web, Android, iOS and a macOS app, and it is built into Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet, Chrome, Search and Android itself. That placement is its superpower: Gemini can summarize an email thread, draft a reply in place, pull figures from a Drive file or set a reminder on your phone without any copy and paste.

The big 2026 milestones:

  • First half of the year: Personal Intelligence expanded as an opt-in feature that lets Gemini personalize answers using Gmail, Photos, YouTube and Search history.

  • Late September: Gemini 4 Argon was announced, first for AI Ultra subscribers.

  • Early October: Google pushed Pixel and Android owners from Google Assistant to Gemini, which drew a wave of complaints.

  • October 13: Gemini 4 Argon reached the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search for AI Pro and Ultra, alongside a Chat and Tasks toggle, 40+ app connections and Antigravity in the Mac app.

  • Through the year: NotebookLM became Gemini Notebook, and Gemini Omni Flash joined Google Flow on every paid plan.

Gemini models explained: Argon, Pro, Flash and Flash-Lite

Gemini 4 Argon is Google's new flagship and the first Gemini 4 model. Google's announcement highlights stronger reasoning on complex tasks, more direct answers with less hedging and fewer clichés, more reliable style instruction following, and more frequent progress updates on long jobs. It is available to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search, and through the paid Gemini API.

Below Argon sit the Pro model (Gemini 3.1 Pro) and the fast Flash models. The free plan uses Flash-Lite, and AI Plus uses Flash. Google AI Pro advertises a 1M-token context window, uploads of up to 1,500 pages, and repository analysis of up to 30,000 lines of code.

What this means for you: the free plan is fine for quick questions and Deep Research, but Argon and the long context, which are the reasons to pick Gemini for serious work, start at $19.99 a month.

Key features in depth

Gemini inside Gmail, Docs, Drive and Meet

On AI Plus and above, Gemini appears in the side panel of Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet and Vids. It drafts and rewrites in place, summarizes long threads, builds tables and formulas, generates slides, and answers questions across your Drive files. For anyone already on Google Workspace, this saves more time than any benchmark difference between models. Business customers get the same through Workspace and Gemini Enterprise plans.

Chat and Tasks

A toggle in the main window switches Gemini from chat to Tasks. In Tasks mode, Gemini works on a job across your Google apps and connected services and keeps going when you step away from your computer. Paired with the new connections to more than 40 apps, including Instacart, OpenTable, Adobe and Shopify, it can now handle errands like ordering groceries or booking a table. AI Ultra also gets early access to Agent Mode and Tasks features in select countries. As with any agent, review what it plans to do before you approve purchases.

Deep Research, Canvas and Gems

Deep Research reads dozens of sources and returns a structured, cited report, and unusually, it is available on the free plan. With your permission it can include Gmail and Drive content, which makes it strong for internal research. Canvas gives you a side-by-side editor for documents and code, and Gems let you save custom assistants with your own instructions and files. All three are on every plan, with higher limits as you pay more.

Gemini Live and Android

Gemini Live is the real-time voice mode. You can talk naturally, interrupt, and share your camera or screen so Gemini can see what you see. On Android it goes further: Gemini is now the default assistant, can control phone settings and hand off to Maps, Calendar and other Google apps. On iPhone, Gemini works well as an app but cannot integrate as deeply with iOS.

Images with Nano Banana

Image generation and editing run on Google's Nano Banana models, including Nano Banana Pro. They are especially good at editing an existing photo, such as changing a background, swapping an outfit or keeping a character consistent across a series. Free users get image generation and editing with limited Nano Banana Pro access; paid tiers raise the limits.

Video with Veo, Flow and Gemini Omni

Video is where Gemini clearly beats ChatGPT, which no longer offers video. Every paid plan includes video generation in the Gemini app and credits in Google Flow, Google's AI filmmaking studio, with Gemini Omni Flash available: 200 credits on AI Plus, 1,000 on AI Pro (plus a limited Veo 3.1 Lite trial), and 10,000 or 25,000 on AI Ultra with full Veo 3.1. Gemini Notebook, Chrome and coding

Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, grounds the AI entirely in sources you upload and creates Audio Overviews, study guides and more; our NotebookLM guide shows how. Gemini in Chrome adds auto browse on AI Pro and Ultra. For developers, Google Antigravity's agentic coding interface now lives inside the Gemini Mac app, with rate limits that scale by plan, and Jules and Google AI Studio cover asynchronous coding and prototyping.

Gemini 4 Argon, Nano Banana Pro and some agent features are limited to select countries, and AI Pro and Ultra require users to be 18 or older.

Is Google AI Pro worth it?

If you already pay for Google storage or YouTube Premium Lite, AI Pro is close to a free upgrade, because 5 TB of storage alone is worth a lot. Even without that, $19.99 for Argon, a 1M-token context, video generation and Gemini inside Gmail and Docs is excellent value. AI Plus at $4.99 is a smart budget pick for Gmail help and light video, but it does not include Argon. AI Ultra is only for heavy video creators and power users.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Native in Google apps and Android: no copy and paste between tools.

  • Gemini 4 Argon: more direct, better-instructed answers than earlier Gemini models.

  • 1M-token context on AI Pro: handles huge PDFs, transcripts and codebases.

  • Video included: Veo and Gemini Omni across paid plans.

  • Generous free plan: Deep Research, image editing, Gems and Canvas at $0.

  • Bundled value: storage and YouTube Premium perks on AI Pro and Ultra.

Cons

  • Google lock-in: the best features assume Gmail, Docs, Drive and Android.

  • Privacy trade-offs: human reviewers may read some consumer chats.

  • Argon is paywalled and region-limited.

  • Android Assistant switch removed features some users relied on.

  • Product sprawl: Flow, Notebook, Antigravity, Jules and AI Studio are separate surfaces.

Limitations and common complaints

The loudest complaints this fall come from Android users. When Google pushed Pixel owners from Google Assistant to Gemini in early October, coverage on sites like Android Authority collected frustration over missing Assistant features, slower or chattier responses, and weaker control of music, messages and navigation in Android Auto. If you rely on smart-home routines or driving commands, test them before you uninstall anything.

Privacy is the second theme. Google's Gemini Apps privacy hub explains that human reviewers may read some conversations to improve products, that reviewed chats are not deleted when you delete your activity, and that chats are still processed even with Keep Activity off. Google advises against entering confidential information. Personal Intelligence is opt-in and off by default.

Finally, like every assistant, Gemini can still be confidently wrong, and user reports in 2026 mention errors in directions and math. Ask for sources, open them, and double-check numbers.

Practical fixes: turn off Keep Activity or use temporary chats for sensitive questions, use a Workspace or Gemini Enterprise account for company data, connect only the apps you need in Personal Intelligence, and pick the model manually when you want Argon.

FAQ

Is Gemini better than ChatGPT?

It depends on your tools. Gemini is better for Google Workspace and Android users, very long documents and video generation. ChatGPT is better for Microsoft 365 users, agentic coding with Codex and breadth of third-party apps. With Gemini 4 Argon, model quality is close, so ecosystem fit should decide.

Is Google AI Pro worth it?

For most Google users, yes. At $19.99 a month, AI Pro includes Gemini 4 Argon, a 1M-token context window, Deep Research, video generation with Flow credits, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, YouTube Premium Lite and 5 TB of storage. If you would pay for storage anyway, it is excellent value.

Is Gemini free?

Yes. The free plan uses the Flash-Lite model and includes image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, Gemini Notebook and 15 GB of storage. Gemini 4 Argon, the 1M-token context and video generation require a paid plan.

What is Gemini 4 Argon?

Gemini 4 Argon is Google's newest flagship model, rolled out to the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers on October 13, 2026. Google says it reasons better on complex tasks, answers more directly, follows style instructions more reliably and reports progress more often on long tasks.

What is the difference between Google AI Plus and AI Pro?

AI Plus costs $4.99 a month and gives the Flash model, 2x free limits, basic video, 200 Flow credits, Gemini in Gmail and 400 GB of storage. AI Pro costs $19.99 and adds Gemini 4 Argon, the 1M-token context, 1,000 Flow credits, Gemini in Docs, Chrome auto browse and 5 TB of storage.

Is Gemini safe to use for work?

For company data, use Google Workspace or Gemini Enterprise, which come with business data protections and admin controls. On personal accounts, human reviewers may read some conversations, so Google advises against entering confidential information. Turn off Keep Activity or use temporary chats for anything sensitive.

Did Gemini replace Google Assistant?

On most Android phones, yes. Google moved Pixel and Android users from Google Assistant to Gemini, and the change drew complaints in October 2026 about missing features and Android Auto behavior. Gemini can do far more than Assistant, but test your routines and driving commands after the switch.

Final verdict

Gemini in late 2026 is no longer the assistant you choose only because it is already on your phone. Gemini 4 Argon puts it in the top tier on model quality, and no rival matches its placement inside Gmail, Docs, Drive, Chrome and Android or its bundle of video, storage and long context for $19.99. The weak spots are a Google-shaped workflow, privacy trade-offs on consumer accounts, and a bumpy Assistant transition. If you use Google apps every day, AI Pro is the easiest recommendation in AI right now. If you do not, start on the free plan, use Deep Research, and compare it with ChatGPT and Claude before paying.
